He gave me a half-shrug as the music started playing, but this time I didn’t recognize it.

“Look!” Leighton said, shaking my arm and pointing to one of the cages. The door was open, and Quinn was standing inside of it as it lowered. His low tenor voice sent goose bumps over my skin as our gazes connected.

“Holy hell. I had no idea he could sing!” Gabby elbowed me in the side.

I melted into my chair as I listened to the lyrics.

She comes to me like a fading dream

Beautiful but just out of reach

She calls to me like a whispered prayer

Always so close, but not quite there

At the tips of my fingers, the tip of my tongue

She’s the one I crave, but she can’t be the one

The echoes of the past grip me tight

Forever keeping me from her light

I watch from the dark, craving her touch

I’ll take what I want, take too much

If I can’t have her light, I’ll give her the dark

Despite what she wants, I’ll leave my mark

At the tips of my fingers, the tip of my tongue

She’s the one I crave, but she can’t be the one

The echoes of the past grip me tight

Forever keeping me from her light

I’ll mark her even as she marks me,

Taking from her as she takes from me

I’ll drag us both into the abyss

And seal our fates with a stolen kiss

At the tips of my fingers, the tip of my tongue

She’s the one I crave, but she can’t be the one

The echoes of the past grip me tight

Forever keeping me from her light

I bit my lip, almost drawing blood in order not to cry and ruin my makeup. Although the song was upbeat, the lyrics were full of pain. Our pain. The pain that ruined us but ultimately brought us together.

As Quinn continued to sing, he stepped out onto the dance floor. The crowd parted while he walked toward me. Quinn took my hand and led me back to the cage, then shut the door before he pinned me in the corner with his body, singing all the while. The cage slowly moved up, and we hovered above the audience.
