‘I love you too, beautiful.’

She could feel his wolf take over, his thoughts no longer words, rather just raw emotions and instincts. She lost herself in his mind, soothing herself with his companionship. With her eyes closed, she felt his emotions as they slowly soothed her to sleep.

She was woken up by a knock on the door and the key clicking in the lock. She opened her eyes, still curled up in bed. Judging by the sun, it was late afternoon. She looked up and saw the young man with the metal collar standing in the door with a bright smile.

“Master hopes you’re feeling better now. He is requesting you to join him for dinner.”

Niev carefully sat up, giving her body time to adjust. She took a deep breath as she moved to the edge of the bed and slowly stood. With cautious steps, she made her way to the door.

“May I assist you?” he asked, holding out an arm for her.

She sighed. She didn’t want his help, yet she knew she was weak. Reluctantly, she held on to his arm as he guided her to the dining room. Solomon was already seated at the table that had been decorated with golden food trays. Unlike last time, Niev felt less fearful. She knew Blake was on his way and that thought gave her strength. She sat down across from Solomon, who was already filling her plate.

“You seem much stronger now that you’ve rested. I’m sure your journey here took its toll on you.” He handed her the plate.

Taking it from him, she faked a grateful smile. She wanted him to feel safe, as if all she’d needed to warm up to him was a little nap. Truly, she was fetching her strength from her bond with Blake.

“Solomon, may I ask a question?”

“I’m sure you have many,” he said, seemingly delighted.

“It’s a little personal.” She tried to sound innocent and hide her true intentions.

He nodded and gestured for her to continue.

“When Selene reformed your parents and their pack, did she give you the ability to transform back into a wolf?”

A somber expression appeared on his face. “Selene’s magic is strong, yet it wasn’t strong enough to give us both.”

“But you’re stronger than a wolf, right?” She tried to sound cheerful.

Her strategy seemed to be working. “Yes that is true.”

She began to stuff her mouth with food, wanting to regain her strength before she was rescued. She knew due to his strength and that of his wolves this wouldn’t be an easy mission. People would get hurt, and she would do anything in her power to make sure all of her pack members would return home.

“It seems that you’ve found your appetite again.”

She smiled up at him. “I apologize for my manners.”

“You’re growing our future within you, eat as much as you like.” He took her now empty plate and refilled it before setting it back down in front of her.

“Have you created many wolves over your lifespan?” she asked, wanting to get as much information from him as possible.

“Right now, I have five wolves with me, all of which will protect you and our future.”

“Is it difficult to create werewolves?”

“You wonder why I only have five and not a whole pack. It’s not difficult, but many humans cannot withstand the change.”

She looked at him, trying to seem as interested as she could. “You must have lived for quite some time.”

“I no longer count, but probably a thousand years. Maybe more, maybe less.”

She had many more questions, but she didn’t want to push him too far. She had the information she needed for now. He watched her closely as she finished her second plate and leaned back, filled to the rim.

“I cannot wait to share a bed with you. As soon as you have birthed our daughters, you’ll lay with me until you are with my child.”

She tried not to cringe or look disgusted. She opened her mind further to her bond with Blake and drew strength from it to find her next words. “I’m sorry you have to wait so long.”
