“I’m sorry,” Niev apologized again. “I didn’t mean to undermine you like this.”
“I know you didn’t, and he’s asked about you the minute he’d regained consciousness after the attack. He was set on you healing him from the beginning.”
She walked to the back of her home and Niev followed her into Brandon’s room.
“Sleeping in, I see,” Brandon snarled.
“Maybe you shouldn’t talk to the woman who can heal you like that. She’s here to help you, gaining nothing from it. A little more gratefulness would be appropriate,” Christa scolded him without Niev having a chance to say a word.
Brandon’s cheeks turned a shameful red as he adjusted his tone. “Good morning Niev.”
“Good morning Brandon. How are you feeling today?”
“Like it’s my lucky day and you’ll heal me so I can start walking again.”
Niev sighed. He needed to understand that this could also go terribly wrong. “This could also be your unlucky day on which I’ll rob you of ever walking again.”
“I understand the risks.”
Niev nodded and sat down next to Christa who had already gotten everything ready for the blood draw. Like the first time, it took Christa a few tries to draw enough blood for them to use.
“Brandon, are you sure about this?” Christa asked to confirm one last time.
“Yes.” He answered instantly, his voice stern.
“Christa, maybe we should inject it not just where he broke his vertebrae but also above and beneath the break to be on the safe side.”
“I agree with you.”
They both turned Brandon on his side to access his broken spine. By touching it, Christa searched for the right locations in between the vertebrae to inject Niev’s blood. It took her a few minutes but, in the end, she’d injected every single drop of blood and carefully rolled him back around.
“Now we wait.” Christa left the room without another world and Niev could hear her busying herself in the kitchen.
“Let us know if you need us or start feeling anything, okay?”
He nodded, so she followed Christa to the kitchen.
While they were cooking lunch, they heard a loud noise and cursing coming from Brandon’s room. They both rushed out of the kitchen only to see him lying on the floor in front of his bed. They both kneeled next to him and helped him sit up.
“What happened?” they simultaneously asked.
“I wanted to walk.”
Christa and Niev exchanged a silent look, but Niev was the first to break it. “Can you feel your legs?”
“Yes, how else would I be able to walk?”
Christa seemed relieved but also worried. “You should take it slow. It might take a while for your body to get used to it again.”
Niev heard heavy footsteps come closer and a moment later, Blake walked around the corner. He stared down at the three of them before Brandon’s impatient voice filled the room.
“Boy, will you help them or stand there and watch?”
Blake immediately stepped forward and lifted Brandon onto the edge of the mattress. Christa grabbed his legs and laid them back into the bed while Niev supported his head.
Christa looked down at Brandon with a stern look on her face. “Don’t try to get up without help. You’ll just break something else.”
He nodded and gave them all an annoyed glare, which they took as a hint to leave.
