“I don’t deserve you.”

“I rather think it’s the other way around.”

She got on her tiptoes and pulled his face down to kiss him. His lips were hot and soft. Instantly a wave of heat overcame her. She gently licked his lips and pushed her tongue inside his mouth, entangling it with his. One of his hands moved down her side toward her hip, grabbing her tightly and firmly pulling her closer. His other had a grip on her neck as if he wanted to make sure she wouldn’t end the kiss. A moan escaped her as she could feel his dick slowly growing and pressing against her midsection. Without warning, he leaned his head back and looked at something behind her.

Without loosening his grip on her hips, he said, “I’ll grab it right now.”

Niev turned and saw his mother placing the huge basket by the door.

“Don’t move, give me a sec.” He smirked as he slightly moved his body away from her and she realized that he wanted to hide his erection from anyone who might be watching.

“Oh, I’m so sorry!”

“Never be sorry for making me want you.”

He gave her another quick kiss and dropped his pants. She couldn’t help but gaze over his body and lick her lips, imagining all the things, she wanted to do with him.

“You looking at me like that isn’t helping, beautiful.” He stepped away from her and shifted.

“Be safe out there. Please don’t try to be a hero. We need you back in one piece.”

He leaned down and touched her forehead with his nose. She caressed his ears, got on her toes, and kissed him right on the forehead between his chocolate eyes. She watched him as he grabbed the food basket and ran toward the trees where he disappeared. She hadn’t noticed the tears running down her cheeks until Layla stepped next to her and handed her a tissue.

“He’ll be fine. He knows what he’s doing.”

“I know, but I can’t seem to stop crying. I’m never like this, and I’m not sure if I’ll ever get used to it.”

Layla laughed gently. “You never get used to sharing your body, but you learn to appreciate that special bonding time it gives you.” She laid her arm around Niev and gave her a quick squeeze before returning inside.

Niev sighed. She hoped Layla was right.

Inside, Mayra was setting the table for breakfast. “Niev, could you please go to Tanner’s office and bring him his plate?” She pointed at a plate filled with eggs, bacon, and pancakes.

Niev admired Mayra for the dedication she had. She loved being the woman of the house, it seemed to give her life purpose. She put her whole soul into making sure her family was taken care of. Niev grabbed the plate and walked toward Tanner’s office by the front door. She knocked and slowly pushed the doors open.

“Perfect, just the woman I was looking for.” He greeted her with a bright smile that got even brighter when he saw what she was holding in her hands.

Niev walked into his large office, which was decorated in a very masculine way. A big, heavy, wooden desk was in the center of the room. The bookshelves behind it were made from the same dark wood as the desk and were filled with books, loose papers, and binders. To Niev’s right was a large window, through which she could see the rocking chair in which Tanner had sat in the morning before.

Remembering that he’d welcomed her into his pack out there gave Niev a warm feeling and her hands started tingling. She walked up to the desk and placed the plate far away from any important looking papers.

“How can I help you, Alpha?” It came out of her without even thinking about it. Was she supposed to call him like that or was it too formal?

He seemed surprised but didn’t correct her. “I’m not sure if Blake has told you, you both hadn’t had much time to talk to each other. Each pack member contributes to the pack and its wellbeing. I would like you to think about the role you would like to take on. Mayra could help you find something suitable at least for as long as you’re able to.” His eyes quickly gazed over her stomach.

Niev already knew what she would like to do, but she was unsure what he thought about her idea. She looked down to the ground and didn’t directly look into his eyes.

“I already thought about it. I would like to help Christa. I’m not sure if she already has a helping hand, but I would like to learn from her.” She paused, not sure how to explain to him that she wouldn’t use her blood to heal anyone. “I want to learn to help without… well… without my gift.”

He nodded. “She can surely use help especially in the weeks to come.” He paused while thinking about her proposal. “I’ll let her know that you’re coming before I head back to the border. See her this afternoon.”

Niev slightly bowed her head. “Thank you, Alpha.”

The morning went by seemingly slowly, all Niev wanted to do was to see Christa. She was on edge and just sitting around seemed to Niev as if she was wasting her time. Not that she didn’t enjoy her time with the children and her newfound family, but she couldn’t shake the feeling she was needed somewhere else.

Michael joined them for lunch as he wanted to see how Layla was holding up. Everyone was worried that the stress was going to send her into early labor. He seemed divided. He wanted to be with his wife and protect the pack at the same time. He was hesitant to leave after lunch, but after Mayra and Lyliann reassured him repeatedly that Layla was in good hands, his worry eased, and he left.

Michael’s worry made her think of Blake and what would happen if the siege took months. She hoped everything would be over and back to normal by the time she was close to her due date. She wasn’t sure if she would be able to give birth without him by her side. The thought of having to go through something scary like that without him was hardly bearable.
