It took Christa a few moments to find the heartbeat. Moments in which Niev held her breath and her own heart seemed to have stopped beating. It felt like an eternity filled with doubt. She was praying that she hadn’t gone too far this time.
Niev pressed her hand against her mouth in surprise as she heard the most wonderful sound in the entire world. There was a faint but strong heartbeat. Tears filled her eyes while listening to the rhythm of her baby’s heart. She closed her eyes and listened as her baby’s heart sang a song for her, a song she never wanted to end.
“You two have been keeping a secret from me.”
Christa’s voice was amused and filled with joy. Niev opened her eyes and looked at her confused. Christa’s eyes moved from Blake to Niev and back to Blake.
“You haven’t told her yet?”
Now Niev turned her head toward Blake, who looked just as confused as Niev felt.
“Told me what?”
“Have you not heard the heartbeats?”
“What do you mean Christa? Is something wrong with my baby?” Niev turned to her and saw a cherished beam on Christa’s face
“Everything is fine with both of your babies.”
No Peaceful Solution
Niev was still in shock when they finally arrived at the main house. Blake had carried her in his arms all the way home. She was still weakened from healing Tristan, and the shock about being pregnant with twins took the rest of what she had. She hadn’t been able to stand on her own feet, so Blake had carried her to get some rest. She’d protested, but Blake had been relentless, and Christa had assured her she would stay with Tristan the entire night. He’d also refused to let her heal his wounds, not wanting to weaken her even more and insisted it could wait until the next morning. Blake was about to open the front door when it was quickly opened from the inside.
“What happened? Is she okay?” It was Mayra’s concerned voice.
“Tristan was attacked but is fine now after Niev healed him. Christa said she is fine but needs some rest.”
Blake walked up the stairs and Niev could hear Mayra’s footsteps following them.
“Mother, you heard what Blake said. They’ll call for us if they need anything.”
Layla must have stopped her mother, as her steps fell silent.
To her surprise Blake walked past their bedroom and opened the door to the bathroom. He sat her down on the edge of the bathtub and started removing her clothes. It was as if she was standing beside herself; her body didn’t feel like her own. He gently placed her in the tub and took the shower head down, rinsing her off with warm water.
“Two babies.” Her voice was a mere whisper and sounded rough as if she had to relearn how to talk. She looked up at his warm face and joyful eyes.
“Selene has truly blessed us.”
“I hope she knows what she’s doing because I clearly don’t.”
She meant it to be funny but deep down, she was scared. She had trouble wrapping her head around one child let alone two. If she was scared before, now she was truly terrified.
His hand washed her down and he paused rubbing his thumb over her belly. “It explains the echo I always heard when I listened to them. I never thought of twins. It’s very uncommon and unheard of in alpha families.”
“Please don’t tell anyone, at least not yet. They’ll go insane and make me lose my mind even more.”
“We can tell them whenever you’re ready, I promise.”
He rinsed her down, wrapped her in a towel, and carried her into their bedroom. Gently, he sat her down on the edge of the bed. Taking her face into his hands, he kissed her lovingly. It was a warm, soft kiss, exactly what she needed.
“I missed you.”
His thumbs softly stroked her cheeks as he looked down on her, his eyes radiating pure joy. “I missed you too.”
She slid her hands under his shirt, touching his smooth skin. As he was standing in front of her, she picked up his shirt exposing his perfectly sculpted body. He pulled it over his head and she was able to gaze over him while tracing his spine with her fingers. With her hands on his back, she pulled him closer, laying her head on his stomach.
“I couldn’t sleep without you by my side. I kept waking up needing your touch, wanting you to comfort me but all I could feel was cold air next to me.”
