She adjusted her white shirt and pants. Erin had lived in town all her life, unlike me and nearly everyone who was part of the MC. She knew the truth about the land, and the lie I had invented to form the brotherhood. We all had to work together, and this was the best time to do it. Even my brother, Greyson believed in the lie, because I swore Erin to secrecy. I couldn’t imagine him turning his back on me, once I was honest with him.

After all, honesty was the best policy.

Erin had told me that from the start, and I was too busy being a stubborn fool to listen to the best advice I’d ever received.

“Why did you really close up?” Playboy asked as he strolled in, and this meant the conversation I was having with Erin would come to an end.

She tucked her blonde bob behind her ears. Her dark eyes darkened as she smiled at Playboy and then left the kitchen.

“Well, the old man is dead, and this means the land now belongs to someone else,” I told him. He was an easy guy to speak to, and I could see Erin shaking her head. I had to tell everyone.

“Yeah, we all know this.”

He raised an eyebrow as if he were suspicious of what I had to say next. Playboy was my brother’s best friend. They’d both served in the SEALs and were discharged at the same time. Greyson told me that it was because of PTSD, and if a man wants to share more details about why he left the Navy then so be it. If not, then never ask. This had been the case with Playboy. I handed him the paper which were served by Steel.

I decided to go in search of my whiskey. My Macallan Sherry Oak was twenty-five years old and had been brought to me by a Scottish MC who visited here once every year whenever the circuit ran. We’d become good friends, and I’d had no idea how much the bottle was worth, until I’d looked it up one day. Once I found out, I made sure it didn’t touch anyone’s lips apart from mine or Jack, whenever he visited.

“Good. Found it!” I’d created a fake wall at the back of the cupboard under the sink, so I could stash things at the back of it. Next to the bottle were a couple of guns and some money. In this business, you never knew when you would need a quick escape.

Playboy didn’t ask what I’d grabbed as his eyes darted across the papers, flipping through it as if he were reading a disturbing book. As he finished, I handed him his glass.

“This is a fucking joke!” His dark eyes lit up as if he was in a rage.

We didn’t toast each other. If anything, he took his shot and then jumped off the chair as if it were hot coals.

“I don’t believe a word of the shit in this document. I’ve got a friend. I’m going to talk to him about this.”

And on that note, he took the glass I was refilling and took another shot.

“Where are you headed Playboy?” I asked, thinking I should tag along.

“I’m going to see Frank. He’ll sort out this shit.”

I nodded in agreement, because I’d worked with his lawyer on a couple of things, and there was no denying he was good at his job. I was about to offer to go with him, but before I could, he walked out of the door. A man on a mission, he passed Mel without saying a word to her.

“Mel. I didn’t see you there.” My heart was flustered as I spun and saw her standing there.

“Dwayne’s sleeping, and Erin said it had been a busy couple of days, so she’d like to sleep in. She has the baby monitor.”

Since we’d kissed, we’d both avoided each other, and before I could say another word, she said, “I’ll leave you to it!”

Then she spun to leave.

She looked nice in a peach dress that was off the shoulders and clung to her body, emphasizing every curve. It was clear that, before she came here, she had hardly any clothes and nothing as stunning as what she was wearing.

“You look really pretty today, darling.”

She blushed. “Thanks. It’s Erin’s. She said she put on weight, and seeing as I’m alittle thing, it would fit. So I tried it on, and then I just couldn’t take it off.”

“It really brings out the sparkle in your eyes,” I growled as I drew closer toward her. There was no resisting her as I got near. She appeared to be thinking the same thing, but I’d closed the club to focus on uncovering the truth about the papers. Matters of the heart would have to wait. Then again, it wasn’t just matters of the heart. This was a love triangle that involved my son. The same son I hadn’t even known existed until two years ago.

What the fuck was wrong with me?

MELINDA

Lucky’s hand pressed gently into my lower back, sliding down and settling on the curve of my ass. The heat from his hand burned through my dress into my skin.
