“You have a death wish or something?” I ask as I cross my arms over my chest and pin them both with a stare.
“Do you want to go to jail?” Wyatt smirks and the other guy just glares at me. I study the other guy as he keeps his eyes on me. He is at least a few inches shorter than me with sandy blond hair that is neatly styled not a hair out of place, and brown eyes. He isn’t as muscular as me, and his arms are full of tattoos.
“I don't have time for your threats or offers. Get off my property.” I turn to leave but stop as the jean guy shouts at me.
“Do you think Bentley would talk to us?” I turn to see the grin on his face. He pulls out his phone showing me a photo of him and Bentley talking. I can’t make out where they were, and I know she wouldn’t just talk to them.
“Leave her alone,” I warn with a low growl.
“Nah, you leave my fucking fiance alone. If I see you near her again, I will take this pretty ranch from you without even blinking.” He has to be lying. There is no way she is engaged to the likes of him. She’s been with me every day.
Wyatt does give me a chance to process what the other guy said as he takes a step closer to me. “I told you I have nothing to lose. I always get what I want. I have to thank Bentley for handing it to me.” He turns around and gets into his truck the other guy smiles at me as he opens his door.
“Tell Bentley that Patrick will see her after her shift.” He winks at me as he gets in the truck. They pull away and I am staring at the truck. Who the fuck are they and has Bentley been working with them this whole time. My heart squeezes at the thought that she has been playing me. But I will not believe it until I have spoken to her. I will take her dinner and then talk to her, Logan will just have to keep Taylor tonight until I come back.
I have no idea how I will be able to concentrate on anything until I have spoken to her. I will just have to keep an open mind for now.
Chapter Seventeen
? Bentley ?
I lift my head as I hear Jaxon’s voice as he enters the firehouse. He looks good enough to eat in his washed-out jeans and a green t-shirt which makes his green eyes pop even more but the look on his face makes my heart beat a little faster than normal. He looks as if he is ready to throw up or yell at someone.
The guys greet him and he walks over to where I am sitting. He leans down and kisses me on the forehead and now I know something is wrong. He puts a takeaway bag in front of me.
“Sorry, I didn’t have time to make something. I got you some burgers.” His voice is cold and he feels like he is at a distance. I get up and walk over to where he is standing. Luke raises his eyebrow but I shake my head. I wrap my arm around his waist and he looks down at me. His green eyes are ready with worry.
“Did something happen?” I ask as I try to keep eye contact with him.
He cups my face before he leans down kissing my lips softly. “I’m sorry, I just have something on my mind.” I nod as I hug him again before I pull away from him. “I need to ask you something.” He rubs the back of his neck while watching me take the burgers out of the bag. “There’s enough for everyone.” All the guys come closer for some burgers and fries. Jaxon takes my hand pulling me to the side. “Walk out with me?”
“I would love to.” I follow him outside as he says bye to everyone. Once we make it to his truck he turns towards me crossing his arms over his chest.
“Who’s Patrick?” My eyes widen as my heart stops. How does he know about Patrick? “Bent? Tell me now!” He demands and I swallow hard as I look down. I am strong and stand up for myself, but that is not something I want to go back to.
“He’s my ex…” I say just above a whisper. Jaxon leans against his truck and lets out a sigh.
“Your Ex fiance?”
I snap my head in his direction. How the fuck did he know. “Yeah…”
“Was this your plan all along? Make me fall for you and then take everything from me?” He spits out and I shake my head as tears sting my eyes. He has it all wrong. I don’t know what he is talking about but he isn’t ready to listen to me.
“What? No… I haven’t seen Patrick in months. Last I saw him was just before I moved here.” I reach out for him but he steps away from me.
“I can’t do this right now. It will be best if you don’t come to the house right now. I will call you when I am ready to talk.” He turns his back on me and gets into his truck. No matter how much I beg him not to leave like this. He still drives off leaving me a crying mess in front of the station.
I turn back and head inside when his truck disappears into the night. How did things go from amazing to him not wanting to see me? How did we go from the happy couple to me balling my eyes out and him driving away? I still don’t know how he found out about Patrick. No one knows about him and I know that no one will talk about him.
“Cruz?” I look up and see Luke and Blake standing by the door. I am thankful that tonight hasn’t been very eventful regarding the firehouse.
“I will be right there.” My voice cracks as I keep my eyes down. I don’t want them to see me break down. I feel a hand on my shoulder. I look up to see Blake looking down at me.
“Come to my office.” He leads me inside and to his office. I feel like I have been in his office more these last few weeks than anyone else. “Sit down and tell me what just happened.”
I take a seat and he sits down next to me on the other chair. Luke walks in with water and my burger. I shake my head when he puts the burger in front of me.
“You need to eat.” He demands as he pushes it back toward me. I pick up a fry before I turn to the two men in front of me. My protective Captain, that will do anything for his crew, and the other one my work best friend. The guy that has my back in any fire.
