Colbie sat across the table from Dallis as they waited for their food. After he’d woken her from her nap, they decided to go ahead and go to the grocery store. Since they were staying for a week, Colbie wanted to pick up some things, so they weren’t eating out for every meal.
Once they returned to the condo, they put everything away and decided where they wanted to go for dinner. The city had several restaurants with great reviews, and they agreed onJersey’s Bar and Grill.
They’d had a slight wait, but Colbie hadn’t expected them not to, considering it was a Friday night. Even though the restaurant was busy, the wait was not bad.
The options on the menu sounded delicious, and Colbie had a hard time choosing what she wanted. As usual, when they went out, Dallis ordered one of the dishes she had trouble deciding between. Colbie had tried telling him several times that he didn’t always have to do that, but she knew she was wasting her breath and that he wouldn’t hear of it.
“You haven’t told me what you have planned for my birthday yet.”
Dallis hummed. “You’re right, and I’m not going to tell you.” Colbie glared at him playfully before pouting slightly. Dallis just chuckled. “It’s a surprise, baby.”
“I guess I’ll be patient,” Colbie responded before picking up her glass and taking a drink. “When are you going to go choose your classes?”
Dallis shook his head. “Nope, we aren’t talking about that. It’s June; I still have time. Besides, I can’t choose them until July anyway.”
Colbie nodded. She knew that Dallis didn’t mind talking about the classes he planned to take with her, but he’d only tended to do so when he felt she was asking as his girlfriend. Which now was the only form she asked in. Colbie figured he didn’t want to discuss it now because they were celebrating on vacation.
When their food arrived, they talked about what Dallis had planned for them to do on specific days while they were there, but he conveniently skipped over her birthday. Colbie hadn’t expected him not to, but she was hoping that maybe he’d slip up a little and let at least one thing out.
Once they finished their dinner, they ordered a piece of cheesecake to share. She always tended to want dessert after dinner but could never finish the entire thing. So, they’d taken to sharing them.
After they finished their dessert, Dallis paid the bill while Colbie left their server a tip. Dallis took her hand and led her out of the restaurant, opening the passenger side door for her. When they were heading back to the condo, Dallis asked her if there was somewhere she wanted to stop. Colbie knew that she’d be able to see everything she wanted to before they left. It was now after nine, and she wanted to spend the rest of the night with him. She told him as much, and they continued to the condo.
Twenty minutes later, they were walking through the front door. Colbie made her way over to the couch and sat down while Dallis made his way into the bedroom. She pulled her phone out, checking it. Cameron was going to send her a video of Cassie’s dress rehearsal for her dance class.
Dallis returned to the living room a few minutes later, taking her hands and pulling her up from the couch. He led her into the bathroom, where there was a bubble bath waiting in the bathtub. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her back against him.
“Why don’t we relax in the tub together for a bit,” Dallis stated, leaning down and kissing her neck.
“I’d like that,” Colbie responded, and Dallis pulled down one of the straps on the sundress she’d put on for dinner.
Colbie removed her arm from it and allowed Dallis to pull down the other one before allowing him to push the dress over her hips. She stepped out of it as it fell to the ground. Dallis released the clasp on the back of her bra, and Colbie let it fall to the floor. He turned her around, his thumbs dipping into the band of her panties as he pushed them down her hips.
When Colbie stood before him naked, she didn’t miss how his eyes roamed over her. She never got tired of this reaction, of the way he looked at her. Whether naked or fully clothed, Dallis never failed to make her feel like she was the most beautiful woman he’d ever laid eyes on. As if she was everything he would ever need.
Colbie wasn’t sure she’d ever been in a relationship where she always felt that way, even when they weren’t around one another. Even with Will, she was sure she’d never felt that way, and she’d been willing to marry him.
Once Dallis was undressed, they got into the bathtub and settled in, her back against his chest. This bathtub was a bit larger than the one at her house, so it was the first time they could relax in the tub together, though they showered together on occasion.
Colbie laid her head against his shoulder, and Dallis ran his hand over her stomach under the water. This moment. This simple moment with him made Colbie feel comfortable and happy. More so than she’d ever been in past relationships. She didn’t want to think about the fact that she’d almost missed out on it. She could have been without this happiness that she’d easily gotten. All she had to do was…Surrender.
Epilogue
Four and a half months later…
Dallis sat on the couch, his books and laptop on the coffee table, doing his homework when Colbie walked through the front door. He looked at her as she dropped her purse onto the table beside the door. She then dropped her bag unceremoniously onto the floor. She stepped out of her heels and walked over to where he was on the couch, sitting beside him.
“I take it you had a rough day.”
“It feels like my last two classes are competing to see who can be the worst. Everyone wants to be a class clown.”
Dallis put down the highlighter he’d been using on a specific section in his textbook. Leaning down, he grabbed her ankles, pulling her feet into his lap as he put space between them. Slowly, Dallis began to massage her left foot.
Her last two classes of the day had been giving her issues from almost the moment the new school year started. Since there were only enough seniors to make up four European history classes, she’d been asked to take on two freshman history classes since the incoming freshmen class was large, and she had them both at the end of the day.
Dallis knew that for some people, it was just them wanting to seem funny or popular by disrupting class. It happened while he was in high school, and he was honest enough to admit that he’d been a part of it his first year. Possibly even sophomore year.
He knew the only reason Colbie hadn’t given both classes detention was that it would be more so punishing herself having to deal with them twice in one day. To Dallis’ knowledge, they hadn’t done anything to be given in or out-of-school suspension, so that step couldn’t be taken either.
