As I place it back down on the nearest table, the door opens, and one of the lab technicians enters with an envelope clutched in his hands.

“We have a match to the fingerprints found in Keira’s bedroom on the day the head was discovered on her pillow and the two officers were killed outside.”

Riveiro perks up, accepting the envelope when he holds it out. Her eyes find mine, and then she lifts the flap and pulls out a sheet of paper.

“Well?” I ask.

“It’s King Knight.”

The morning sun filters in through the curtains. One look at the alarm clock confirms it’s nearly time to grab a shower and get ready for school, but the last thing I want is to leave my bedand King.

It was the first time I’d woken up beside him. Like a creep, I watched him sleep. In fact, I could stare at him forever. At the way his dark bed hair falls across his dark brow and how good his muscular, tanned back looks in the morning light. I can’t believe he’s here. In my bed.

It’s a shame for reality to intrude on this moment when I want nothing more than to stay here all day and fuck. Even if my pussy is already so sore this morning that I can feel him every time I shift.

“Are you sure you don’t want to come with me to school?” I ask, my chin propped on his bare chest, while he traces the bridge of my nose with a finger.

“You know I do, but I have a few things I need to take care of first.”

“Sounds ominous,” I tease.

“I need a new phone, for starters. Besides, we need to stay low for a few weeks.”

I pull a face. “Fuck that.”

It makes him chuckle, his chest vibrating. “I don’t like it either, but we need to play it smart. It will look suspicious if we’re seen together so soon after Liam goes missing.”

“Since when did you become the sensible one?” I pout, even though he’s right.

King rolls us over, pulling the quilt over our heads and nuzzling my neck. He tickles my ribs, and I squeal with laughter while he shushes me.

“Quiet, baby.” His smile is as wide as mine. “You don’t want your mom to come in here.”

Wrapping my thighs around his trim waist and my arms around his neck, I stare up at him. Framed by the white quilt, his dark hair curls at his nape, and his soft lips are parted. “I can’t think when I’m around you. You make me stupid.”

That has him chuckling again, and it’s a sound I love. “That’s good, isn’t it?”

“Sometimes.” I lift my head off the pillow to taste his lips, then whisper, “Sometimes, not so much.”

“No? Why’s that?” His lips are back on my neck, stealing my train of thought.

“The killer is still out there.”

King peppers kisses up my neck, chin, and lips. “He won’t go anywhere near you. I’ll kill him myself.”

“King,” I whisper, and he stiffens slightly before leaning back to look me in the eyes. “I’m sorry about Jasper and Kit.”

A muscle works in his cheek, but aside from that, his face remains a careful mask.

“Can I tell you a secret?”

It’s hot beneath the quilt, but I’m grateful for the cover it gives us. Secrets spill easier when it’s just us, hidden inside our cocoon.

“You can tell me anything, baby.”

His tone is sincere enough that I relax a little while playing with the silky curls at the nape of his neck. I focus on them, whispering, “I killed my stepdad.”

King says nothing, so I chance a look at him.
