Her head flies up, and she clicks the side of her phone to dim the screen. “Yeah, why?”

“Why are you looking at King’s profile?”

“Research.”

Confused, I pull a face. “What kind of research?”

Another cold breeze makes me shiver as a yellowing leaf blows across my legs.

Before she can answer, Madison joins us. She’s wrapped up in her pink puffer jacket, with a white bobble hat pulled over her ears.

Sitting down, she stretches her long legs out in front of her. Her black jeans are destroyed at the knees, revealing pale skin, and her white Chucks are dirty and scuffed.

She pops her pink, strawberry bubble gum and lowers the headphones. “Liam’s friend Miles is looking extra good today. Maybe I should become a cheerleader.”

I snort. “Miles and Sienna predate the dinosaurs. Good luck with that one.”

“I know that, and thanks.” She flashes a smile.

Beside me, Keira laughs under her breath before climbing to her feet.

“Where are you going?” I ask.

“I need to use the bathroom. I’ll be back soon.”

She walks off, and I watch her go. When I look back at Madison, I find her staring at me with a smirk.

“What?”

“Oh, nothing,” she says, wetting her lips. “You’re so obvious, that’s all.”

“Excuse me?”

“Do I need to spell it out for you?” She leans in close, smiling a little too big to be genuine. “Liam.”

Stiffening, I watch her closely. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I’m sure you don’t.” She smiles at me for a moment longer, then eases back. “I wonder what Keira would say if I told her that her best friend is fucking her boyfriend?”

“I’m not fucking Liam.”

Staring out over the football field, she slowly lets her eyes slide back to mine. Wisps of raven hair frame her face, and when she sinks her teeth into her bottom lip, I catch a glimpse of her pink bubblegum. “What if I told you,” her eyes stray over my shoulder, “that I have proof?”

Keira is on her way back, her head bent low as she crosses the grass.

“What do you want?” I bite out.

Her smirk grows, and there’s a taunting glint in her eyes. “Who says I want something? Maybe I just want to watch you squirm.”

Loud hollers from the football field cause my heart to jump to my throat while I continue staring at Madison.

She’s a fucking bitch.

“Everybody wants something,” I reply through gritted teeth.

“You don’t like it, do you? That someone knows your dirty little secret.”

Keira is within earshot now. I lower my voice. “If you open your fucking mouth, it’ll be the last thing you do.”
