A beat passes before King bursts out laughing. It shakes his diaphragm, the sound rich in the narrow stall. He spins me around, cups my chin, and tilts my eyes up to his. “You had sex with your best friend?”

“I was feeling vulnerable.”

What a pathetic excuse. I cringe inwardly.

“You can’t fuck other people every time you feel vulnerable.”

“I know. I was scared. Scared they wouldn’t let you out.”

His brow comes down on mine, and he sinks his teeth into his bottom lip to hold back another blinding smile. “I told you, baby. I’ll always come back to you.” He bends at the knees, kissing me gently. “I’m obsessed with you.”

“You’re not mad?”

“About Madison?”

I nod, gripping the lapels of his leather jacket, which is still cold from his walk here.

“No. Just don’t do it again. I wouldn’t want to kill your friends.”

“King…” I whisper, stepping closer.

His arms come down around me and he kisses my forehead, my cheek, the tip of my nose. “Yes, baby.”

“I killed Chris.” Hesitating, I look up at him. “Miles is dead, too.”

His brows pull down low, and I see the question in his eyes.

“My mom, she, uh… she kicked me out—”

“She did what?!” he snaps, his tone laced with anger.

“She found out about my stepdad and me.”

King cradles my cheeks, his hands warm and soothing against my skin.

“As I was walking down the sidewalk, Chris and Miles drove up beside me and offered me a lift to Madison’s house. They took me out into the forest and drugged me, demanding I tell them what happened to Liam.”

“Then what happened?”

This is the part I dread to speak out loud. “Chris tried to sexually assault me.” King’s face turns to stone, so I rush out, “He didn’t get that far. The killer murdered Miles and tied Chris to a tree while I was unconscious.”

His calloused, warm fingers brush a strand of wavy hair away from my cheekbone. “You killed Chris?”

“The killer plays games. When I woke up, there were instructions on what to do. He left me a knife.” I don’t need to tell him the rest. King sees the truth in my eyes and blows out a soft breath through his nose.

“You did the right thing.”

“I was so angry King. He touched me… He…”

“You don’t need to explain. I get it. I’m just so sorry that I was in prison, or I would have been there to protect you.”

I swallow down the lump in my throat, pushing up on my tiptoes. His lips are soft against mine, and his stubble prickles my skin. Clutching his lapels, I moan into his mouth. It’s only a soft sound, but he devours it like he’s waited a long time to taste me again.

I break away first, and our lips hover inches apart. “I didn’t know what to do afterward. I had no home to return to, I was drenched head to toe in blood, and I had two dead bodies to take care of. Madison helped me.”

“It should have been me you called for help.”

“You’re here now.”
