I grip her chin in my fingers and crash my lips on hers. They’re sticky from her treat, and when I pull back, I swipe my tongue over mine.
She pulls me down onto the blanket, giving us privacy from anyone walking by. She sits between my legs, resting her head on my shoulder, and we stare out at the water.
We sit in silence, listening to the waves lapping at the shoreline and people laughing in the distance.
“Did Madden tell you we finished recording our demo?”
She shakes her head. “That’s amazing. One day, you guys are gonna take off and hit it big. I just know it!”
I raise my brows. “You think so?”
She nods enthusiastically. “I do. I’ve never doubted it either.”
“That’s my dream.”
It’s everything I’ve always wanted. To get the fuck out of this town, away from my mom, and never look back.
I used to lie awake at night and think about the day it would happen. I’ve busted my ass. We all have, fighting to make it a reality.
“What about you?” I ask.
“What about me?” Her face softens.
“What’s your dream?”
She releases a slow breath and shrugs. You can practically see the barrage of thoughts and questions swirling through her mind. She glances back out onto the water, seeming to consider her answer.
“Finish school. Find a job. Who knows? I mean, one day I’d love to settle down and have a family, but I’m not thinking that far ahead.”
She drops her eyes to her hands, moving her sunglasses still hanging from her collar to toss them onto the blanket next to us.
I wonder if she’s thinking about how different our paths are.
Gritting my teeth, I shake my head, forcing it from my mind.
It didn’t matter anyway. Sooner or later, this would all come to an end. All I would have to hold on to are these memories with her.
Chapter Five
Kyla
“Spill the beans, sister.” I snicker.
It’s been a few days since I last met up with Ivy. Even still, I’m behind on what’s going on with her and in her life. The last time we spoke, she told me about the date she went on with Brix.
Ivy’s eyes dart over to me, and she narrows them playfully.
“What do you want to know?” she quips.
“It seems like things progressed so quickly. You went from hating each other to what? Living in the same house to damn near ready to rip each other’s clothes off. How’d it even happen?”
She wrinkles her nose, fighting off a grin.
I keep one foot planted on my board, using the other to pick up speed, weaving from side to side. The wheels of my longboard click rhythmically from the cracks on the sidewalk.
Ivy’s riding along next to me, the warm breeze causing her dark hair to blow behind her.
“I’m learning there’s a lot more hidden under the asshole façade he tries to play off in front of everyone else. He can be surprisingly sweet sometimes.”
