I jump when Calix grabs my left breast and unashamedly squeezes it.

His mother throws me a disgusted look before barking at Calix to leave.

I don’t miss the way Aiken looks at me as Calix drags me out of the room.

There is regret on his face.

Regret and worry.

Another wave of anger and hatred crashes over me.

They’re all the same, these dark elves.

They pretend they care and then they sell you out.

Aiken might not have done anything to hurt me, but he is a dark elf. He is probably as bad as his brother.

Calix drags me out of the dining room and up a flight of stairs.

The house is dark and quiet. Even the servants have gone to bed.

Before I can do anything, Calix has me pushed up against a wall, with his hand sliding up my skirt.

I am gasping for air, and my shaky breathing is the loudest thing in the room then.

But then footsteps sound around the corner.

Calix pulls away from me, muttering an expletive.

“You better sleep tight for me.” He licks my cheek again before pulling away and leaving.

AIKEN

Calix lets me know that he had Isla moved to a different room.

She isn’t sleeping in the servants’ quarters any longer, but in a room on our floor.

So that she can be closer to him, I think angrily to myself.

How is this even happening? And why do I care so much?

Dinner was torture and I do not want to live through that again.

I’m almost grateful that Mother forbade Calix from bringing Isla to dinner again, because I simply cannot experience that again.

Although Calix will probably find a way to get around that command from Mother.

I shake my head as flashbacks from the evening speed through my mind.

Isla, beautiful Isla, in a dress designed to make any man fall in love with her, was so belittled that I am surprised that she didn’t run out of the room in tears.

But somehow, she made it through dinner. Even though Mother was on a tirade all night.

I didn’t understand the length of my mother’s hatred for humans, I think to myself.

But I do now.
