Damian sighed as he turned into a parking lot behind a high-rise building. “Cass, I can practically feel your anxiety. Relax.”
I glanced at him with a frown. Relax? In a few minutes, I’d meet his aunt, the woman who raised him. After dinner with her, we would head to the facility where his father resided. I was meeting his entire family in one evening. Relaxation was a distant memory. When was the last time I did a meet-the-parents with a guy?
Never!
I’d never gotten in that deep with anyone for it to happen. Nibbling my lower lip, I asked, “Are you sure it’s okay for me to just drop in on your aunt for dinner? You two had it scheduled before I came.” I thought it was cute that he had dinner at least once a week with his aunt, despite his busy schedule. “I don’t want to impose.”
“You’re not. Aunt Lucia knows you're coming, and she’s thrilled.”
“She knows that I’m…”
“No.” He smiled. “I thought we’d make the announcement together. She’s just happy that I’m bringing a woman to meet her… finally.”
My eyebrows popped up. “How long has it been since you’ve introduced her to a girlfriend?”
He snorted and switched the car off. “I’ve never really done girlfriends, so, zero.”
I stared at him, not sure what to make of that revelation. I believed him. Damian wasn’t one to lie. Should I feel special? It wasn’t like we were a couple. “Oh.”
Amusement danced across his face. “You’re not freaking out thinking I’m going to introduce you as my girlfriend, are you?”
Pursing my lips, I glanced away. “Not at all.” Honestly, I was warming up to the idea of… something more serious with him. I looked back at Damian with curiosity and a little confusion. What was it about him that didn’t leave me horrified about stepping into an emotional relationship? Being with him so far was so easy. My trust in him grew by the day. He was just so—
“Have you figured out whatever it is you’re trying to figure out?”
His question pulled me from my reverie. “Um…” Shaking my head slightly, I embraced the heat engulfing my face. I was staring at him wide-eyed like an idiot. “What will you introduce me as?” I gave him a teasing smile. “Hopefully not your baby momma. I’d hate to see the look on your aunt’s face.”
He laughed. “Don’t worry. Aunt Lucia will be lost in her world of excitement once I mention the baby, so she probably won’t even hear much of anything else we tell her after that.” He pulled his key from the ignition and turned to me with a somber expression. “A little warning: Lucia is… a lot. “
“A lot?” My eyebrows elevated.
“She has a big personality. Some might say she’s nuts.”
I laughed because his eyes lit up with humor. “But what do you say?” I asked, playing along.
His lips twitched at the corners. “I say she’s just… passionate.”
“Right.”
“Anyway,” he continued, his smile getting bigger. “Don’t be surprised or put off if she starts planning the baby shower, the christening, the first birthday party… and our wedding.” He shrugged. “And not necessarily in that order.”
“Our wedding?”
Damian was out of the car and moving around to my side. He wore a huge grin, so I assumed he was messing with me. When he helped me out, I glared at him and repeated, “Our wedding? Seriously?”
“You’ll see how seriously eccentric Aunt Lucia is but just let her madness roll off your shoulders.”
I snorted.
“I think you’ll like her and I know she’ll like you,” he said.
My dubious expression made him smile.
“Just relax. I’ve got you.”
Those three words automatically put me at ease. My trust in Damian wasn’t just growing. I trusted him wholeheartedly. When did that even happen? He took my hand and led me toward the building before I could think about it.
Damian had the key to his aunt’s apartment, so we walked right in when we got to her floor. The apartment setup was the typical luxury condo. It reminded me of Damian’s posh penthouse but smaller. My anxiety was on the rise since we stepped out of the elevator, and it was back in full force now.
