“She’s not…” I looked skyward. Cass would probably freak out if anyone referred to her as my girlfriend. The woman was more skeptical about commitment than even me, and that was saying a lot. “Don’t tell me you called to irritate me.”
“Like I said, I called to check up on you and to inform you about my upcoming trip with Cassandra.”
My jaw tightened with annoyance because I could hear the teasing in Ken’s tone. “What trip?”
“It’s really none of your business because she’s my client, but I figured since you knocked the lady up, I owe you a courtesy call.”
“Just spit it out, Ken,” I growled. “What trip?”
“Cassandra and I are going to Jersey today. We’re going to pay her old man a visit. She asked me to accompany her and since I like her, I agreed.”
I gripped the stress ball so tightly, my knuckles turned white. Cass spent the night in my arms, but she didn’t tell me about her plan with Ken. Logically, I knew I shouldn’t be jealous. As Ken said, Cass was his client. My partner always went above and beyond to see a case through, even if it meant accompanying a client to another state to meet the long-lost father he’d helped her find.
However, the jealous monster in me reared its ugly head. The thought of Cass spending so much time with my partner made me want to deck Ken in the face. “What do you mean you like her?”
The taunting chuckle on the other end of the line made my fist tighten some more around the ball.
“Get over yourself, Alvarez,” Ken drawled. “You know what I mean.”
Taking a deep breath, I told myself I was being irrational. Still, there was no way that trip would happen… without me. “You don’t have to accompany her.”
“I don’t?”
“No, because I’m going with her.”
“I see…” Ken hummed. “And does she know that you’re going with her?”
I gritted my teeth. “Obviously not. She will soon enough.”
“Huh. Well, she should be on her way here soon. So should I tell her or will you?” There was laughter in Ken’s voice. The ass was having a field day with this.
Rubbing my jaw, I pondered. Knowing Cass, she’d tell me to take a hike if we gave her a heads-up about the new arrangement. It was a dick move but… “We won’t tell her until it’s time to leave.”
“Jesus, Alvarez,” Ken groaned. “You know what? I want no part of this madness. By all means, accompany your woman. I mean, technically, she’s a client of our company, so the new arrangement won’t be completely weird. But make sure you tell her this was all your idea.”
Massaging my forehead, I mumbled, “Yeah. Whatever.”
Ken sighed. “So this is what a woman and a baby do to a man…”
I took a deep breath and gathered my patience. “I’m not… you know what? Shut up, Ken.”
“The kindergartener in you has come out.” He laughed. “You've really got it bad.”
I slammed the phone down and scowled as if Ken could see me. “Asshole.” Picking up the phone again, I dialed Bree.
“Yes, Mr. Alvarez?”
“Cancel all my meetings for today and reschedule them.”
“Okay…”
“Thank you.”
Sitting in silence, I punished my stress ball. Ken was right. I had it bad, and I might be crazy. Cass would be beyond pissed that I hijacked her trip to meet her father. Hopefully, she got over it quickly because there was no way I'd sit back and let another man accompany my pregnant—whatever Cass was to me right now—on such an emotional occasion. I had to be there to ensure she made it through the meeting with her father okay.
