“Oh.” She blinked. “Oh. Well, that tracks.”
Walter kissed her neck. “What does?”
“That Merry would pick an alpha scarier than she is.”
He turned her to face him. “What do you mean she’s scary?”
Ula looked at the suspicion in his eyes. She smiled and patted his cheek. “She’s my angel. She would tear anyone apart who came for me. It has given me confidence that no bunny should have, and I appreciate it more than you can imagine.”
“I will have to get her something special for her birthday.” He smiled. “Do you know when it is?”
“The twenty-ninth. Same day as mine.”
He blinked. “Seriously?”
“Yeah. We decided to join our birthday parties in high school. Even if no one else came, we had each other.”
“You will need to get used to turning to us.”
Ula nodded. “I will, as long as you don’t stop me when I call for her, I will turn to you.”
Clark snorted, and Kasim sighed. Walter nodded. They all said, “Deal.”
Ula smiled. So, you could train foxes.
Chapter Six
Merry watched the lights disappear down the driveway, and she exhaled slowly. “Well, I saw your guys but did not see mine. That was a surprise.”
Ula hugged her. “I like both sets. Yours are broody, and mine are cute.”
“Go to bed, brat.” Merry patted her arm.
Ula grinned and called out, “Clark and Kasim are coming tomorrow.”
“Of course, they are. Pavlova it is. Or do you want macarons?”
“Angel food and lemon curd?”
“Deal.”
“Pavlova on Friday?” Ula leaned back through the entrance to the hall.
“Fine. I will make the meringue tomorrow.”
Ula squealed and clapped her hands. “Night!”
Merry took the eggs out of the fridge, lined up the sugar and her mixer, and printed out her recipes. She would be able to get going first thing in the morning.
She grabbed her phone from the counter and headed to bed. She got ready to sleep and was in bed when her phone started to ding alerts.
She settled back and unlocked her phone. She blinked. She had been added to a group chat.
She winced as she tapped on the screen. The chat contained three recently familiar names. When she opened it, she saw three greetings. Uh, hello? I am guessing you are all home now.
Giovanni answered. We are. The other two are taking cold showers.
She smiled. They could have just jumped in the lake.
