The boy stopped next to Maddie's cart and froze. Sensing the tension, the boy looked between him and Maddie several times.
"Um … who are you and why are you looking at my mother like that?"
Mom.
That's twice the boy had called Maddie mom.
Holy shit, Maddie had a son. And not some little boy, but a teenager, and from the looks of it, a little girl as well.
Fuck! Maddie was a mother.
A mother he'd done the dirty with.
A mother he wanted to do it with again.
Double fuck!
Even seeing her with kids didn't stop him from getting hard just from the memories of their time together.
He was screwed.
Chapter 4
Sheneededtododamage control, and fast. Maddie was fortunate that her son waited until they were in her car on the way home before he started questioning her.
"Who was that guy, Mom?"
"Just someone I met at work."
She was a shit liar. Always had been. Anthony used to tease her about it early on in their marriage. Before drinking became his priority and it was too much of an effort for him to care what she did or said.
"I don't like the way he looked at you."
Gabe wouldn't drop it. That was a quality he got from his father. Not exactly one she was fond of in Anthony, and certainly not in her son.
"Well, you don't have to worry. I doubt we'll see him again."
Her core clenched at just the thought that she wouldn't see Ray again. Over the last month, she convinced herself the sex wasn't as good as she was making it out to be. Or that he wasn't as handsome as her memory wanted her to remember him. She had almost succeeded, too. And then she had to go and run into him. Not only did she lie to herself, but her memory didn't do him the justice he deserved.
"Good, because he was checking you out."
Damn it. Her belly flip-flopped at her son's observation. She'd really hoped her children hadn't noticed the way Ray had looked at her. Well, at least until he realized she was a mother. There was no mistaking the shock. It was like a neon arrow pointing straight to his raised eyebrows.
"That's because Mom is super pretty," Charley added.
One look in the rearview mirror and she could see her little girl's wide smile as she bounced in her seat.
"Thank you, sweetie."
"Just because she's pretty doesn't mean he needed to check her out," Gabe grumbled.
With his arms crossed over his chest and a scowl on his face, he was the complete opposite of his sister.
Heaven and hell.
Day and night.
God and Satan.
