‘I can’t,’ he says. ‘I don’t have anything with me.’

‘I don’t care.’

He shakes his head but unzips his trousers and pulls out his cock. It’s big and hard and I can only imagine how it would feel thrusting into me. Edward places my hand on the shaft but I drop to my knees and take him between my lips. I lick the tip, tasting him, cup his balls with my hand and grip his tight ass with the other. I have to relax my jaw to accommodate him but when he slides his fingers into my hair and drives his length into me, I know I’m pleasing him.

His thrusting speeds up, his cock seems to swell and suddenly he takes a step back as if to pull out of me, but I move with him. I keep sucking him until he cries out my name then I swallow every last drop, hold him in my mouth until he is spent.

He pulls me to stand with him, gently slides my dress down over my thighs and kisses my breasts before pulling the bodice of my dress over them. I am so weak that if he wasn’t right in front of me, holding me up, I would sink to the floor.

‘What are you doing to me, woman?’ he asks before kissing me so tenderly that my heart sings.

When we get home after the party, I remove my shoes in the downstairs hallway then climb the stairs. I check on Joe and find him sleeping cuddled up to a teddy bear. I tuck the covers around him and kiss his forehead. When I look up, Edward is watching me from the adjoining doorway. He crosses the room and kisses Joe then leads me out to the hallway and walks me to my room.

‘Joe will be up early,’ he says. ‘It’s probably better if we sleep in our own rooms. Besides which, I have to help Santa.’

‘Do you want a hand?’ Having done this for Daniel, I know it can be fun but also time consuming.

‘It’s fine,’ he says. ‘Jeff’s already getting everything in from the garage and I’ll just add the final touches.’

It must be great to have staff to help with things like that. I can remember Mum hiding gifts behind her clothes in the wardrobe and even asking one of the neighbours to have the second-hand bike she bought Daniel one year in their shed until Christmas Eve.

‘Of course.’ I know he’s being sensible but I feel spurned, as if he doesn’t want me now. I’d like to help but I also don’t want to overstep any lines in case Edward doesn’t want me to. I also don’t think that Joe would care if he found us in bed together tomorrow but it’s a risk and the last thing I want is to hurt him. Edward is his father and so he knows best; it is his decision to make.

‘Goodnight, Ava,’ Edward says, caressing my cheek before placing a warm kiss on my lips.

I watch as he crosses the landing and descends the stairs then go into my room and close the door, yawning as exhaustion claims me. Tomorrow will be busy so sleep will do me good.

As I slip between the cool covers, I lie back and let the events of the evening play through my mind and soon I drift into sleep where Edward once again graces my dreams.

Chapter45

Ava

‘Ava! Wake up!’

I do, to the sensation of someone tapping my face. Blinking, I peer through the mess of my hair at Joe.

‘It’s Christmas Day! Come on, we need to see if Father Christmas has been.’

He bounces on the spot and so I shake my head to clear the sleep fog then peer through the grey light. ‘What time is it?’

‘Just after five,’ Edward says from the doorway. ‘I told you he’d be up early this morning.’

‘Oh god,’ I say as I push back the covers and swing my legs over the side of the bed. ‘Let me just grab my robe.’

When we descend the stairs, Joe between us, the smell of pine and spice greets me and I breathe it in, savouring the festive smell. The tree lights and those on the banisters twinkle in the gloom. It’s like a Christmas advert on TV and I’m actually inside it!

We go to the main lounge and there, in front of the tree in the corner of the room, is a pile of colourfully wrapped gifts.

‘Wow!’ It’s a big pile.

‘Father Christmas has been!’ Joe claps his hands. ‘Can I open them, Daddy?’

‘Of course,’ Edward says.

We sit side by side on the sofa while Joe tears through paper. A fire, already lit before I got up, crackles in the grate and outside, light starts to brighten the sky. When Polly comes in with a tray of coffee, I accept a mug gratefully, and cradle it between my hands.
