“Oh, come on now, Sara, if Flynn wants to go home with the goth chick, let him.”

Goth Chick? Let him? Do they not remember that I am his girlfriend?

“Like I said, I don’t care where you guys go. We are leaving.” I’ll drag Flynn out of here if I have to. I give Flynn a look that means I mean it and he gives in.

“Looks like I am out of here, going to go have me some fun with my goth chick.”

Yeah, he wishes.

By some miracle we make it to the car without Flynn falling over. I hated leaving that group in there for Lacey to throw out, but I was over the night, and they weren’t my responsibility.

“Come on babe, let’s get home so I can get you naked.” Flynn is slurring even worse now. He starts digging for his keys, but when he finds them, he does not hand them over.

“Fat chance bucko. Hand me the keys Flynn.”

“Oh, come on, you thought I would let you drive my BMW,” He snarls. “No way, I am fine.”

“No, you are not. Flynn, I am serious. If you do not want me to drive that is fine, we will take a cab, but you driving is not an option.”

And that was all it took to get the argument started.

Chapter 4

Graham

Todayismyfirstpatrol in Aster Creek. Somehow Owen talked our Sergeant into letting him be my training officer, so I will be riding shotgun with him until they think I am ready.

“Hey, bud, ready for you first patrol?” I meet Owen at the front of the department, and he has that same stupid grin on that he always does. I have a feeling he will not be my T.O. for long.

“As ready as I’ll ever be,” I huff. I am still exhausted from moving and then the unwelcomed visit from Claire. I am sure my mom had something to do with that. I ended things with Claire before I left. I did not move far, only a half an hour away, but I did not have any intentions of telling her that. She and my mom had formed a quick bond the one time they met. They both wanted the same thing, for me to settle down. It is not like I am out there going from one to the next, I just do not really care for relationships right now.

“You look like hell; did you stay up unpacking all day?” Owen pulls out of the parking lot.

“No, I had Claire show up at my door demanding to see my new place and talk,” I shudder at the word. I knew I would have to call her eventually and make sure she understands that this is just not going to work out, but I will worry about that another day.

“Oh man, that sucks. How did you get rid of her?”

“I didn’t. Actually, Winry did,” I whisper the last part.

“Winry, really?” I fill him in on Winry’s little stunt that actually worked. At first, I thought she was crazy, but somehow in my sleep-deprived state I figured out that she was trying to help me.

“So, any thoughts on her?” Owen asks, all too giddy to hear my answer.

“Who, Winry or Claire?” I deflect.

“You know which one,” I don’t have to look at him to know he has a ridiculous smile on his face.

“Let’s just say I hate it when you are right,” and right he was. Winry was just my type. Medium-length hair, just a shade away from being jet black, big round hazel eyes that actually had little flecks of blue in them. She also had an adorable dimple chin that I really wanted to touch my thumb to. She was petite but not scrawny. When I saw her for the second time in that dress, I wanted to fall to my knees—she was gorgeous. And that red lipstick—that really did it for me.

“I knew it. You are in so much trouble,” he taunts.

“I am not, she is just my neighbor, nothing more. I am not stupid enough to think starting something with Chief’s daughter is even remotely a good idea.”

“Sure buddy, I believe you.” He claps me on the shoulder.

“Whatever, man.”

“So sensitive.”
