Shannon laughed. “We are, but I’m also going to be your friend who tells you the harsh truths. You need to stop hiding and running, Missy. Tell Charlie you love him, and just listen. Watch what he does. Hear what he says. I have never met the man, but something tells me he’s going to say exactly what you need to hear.”

“And if he doesn’t, you’re buying me a ticket to Wasilla.”

“I swear on my life, if he breaks your heart or says something stupid, you’ll be on your way to Wasilla within the hour.”

I tapped my fingers on the steering wheel and looked around. “Fine, but there is one problem.”

“What?” she asked.

“I don’t know where the hell I am.”

Chapter Sixteen

Charlie

She was gone.

I had no clue where the hell Missy had gone.

But there was one thing that was giving me hope.

Bandit was inside her apartment.

There was no way in hell she would leave without him.

My phone rang, and my heart soared with hope but was shot down when I saw it was Shelby calling.

“Hello?”

“Did you find her?” she asked.

“No, but Bandit is still at her apartment.”

“Are you sure she’s not in there, too?”

“Yeah,” I sighed. “Bandit is sitting by the door, and if she was in there, he would be next to her.”

Shelby sighed. “Well, I guess you’re just going to have to wait until she shows up.”

“Yeah, I’m waiting.” It had been two hours since Missy had disappeared from the restaurant, and I wasn’t leaving her door until she got home.

I had time to think, and Shelby had helped to fill in some of the blanks.

She was close to twenty weeks, and my heart had soared when I had done the math.

Missy was having my baby.

“Well, hang in there, Charlie. You messed up before, but you can fix it. Call me if she doesn’t show up soon. Wilder and I can send out the calvary to find her.”

“Will do.” I ended the call and dropped my phone on the floor.

“Mama will be home soon,” I called to Bandit.

A soft whine sounded through the door, and I laid my head back. I closed my eyes and let out a heavy sigh.

Never in a million years would I have thought that Missy was pregnant this whole time, but it all made sense now.

She had stayed away from me so I wouldn’t notice the changes in her body. The few times I had seen her, she had been dressed in baggy clothes, but she just looked like she was comfortable, not like she was hiding something.
