His stares are full of apology and desire. Henry is a chatterbox; it feels like he is trying to impress Amelia more than he wants to converse with Nancy.

Mrs. Robinson only listens and talks when she needs to. We hear one more ding from the front door.My mother!

"I will get the door." I hurry out of the dining room to the front door. I open the door to my beautiful mother. She pulls me close for a warm hug. I linger a bit. "I miss you so much," I say as I refrain from her hug.

When I look closer, I discover she is dressed up and unexpectedly wears makeup.

“Are you going out on a date?” I whisper.

“Yes, can’t an old woman have some fun?”

I raise my brows at her, "You are dating someone, and I don't know about it?"

“This is the first date,” she replies. “I don’t know if I will go out with him again.”

“We are not done with this conversation,” I say as I take her coat. “I want to know who is getting my mother to wear makeup again.”

I lead my mother into the dining room and introduce her to the whole family. Amelia helps with the dishes when dinner is over.

Mrs. Robinson and Nancy leave together like they have some catching up to do, but Henry stands with Troy by the window and talks about something we can't fathom.

I see Amelia's face dampen as she leaves with Henry. She looks as though she is about to face her demons at the home, while my mother sits in the living room, waiting for her Uber to arrive and giggling over the phone.

Whoever her date was, I am sure she is seeing him soon.

Henry and Amelia leave the house a few minutes later while my mother takes her Uber home. I hold onto Troy's broad chest as we wave goodbye; we both sigh deeply when the cars drive out of the driveway.

Chapter twenty-nine

Checkmate

Troy

"I am sorry, Troy," Greyson says as he holds copies of the prenup and marriage papers. "Nothing we can do about it. This document is legit, and whoever this Nancy is has the right to fight you in court. The sad part is that she will win."

I hold my head as I hear Greyson, my lawyer, talk about the prenup I signed more than a decade ago. “We got this in Las Vegas,” I say. “I thought nothing is ever serious in that town, not when you are drunk and in love.”

Greyson scoffs, "You didn't get this in a pawn shop," Greyson says. "You might have been too drunk to know that you got it in a court."

My left brow arches at Greyson. “So, you are saying we don’t have a good case if I take Nancy to court?”

Greyson shakes his head. “We don’t have a case at all,” Greyson says as he arranges the papers.

“What do we do now?”

Greyson shrugs. "You either stay married to this person and make her call off the prenup or divorce and lose half your estate," he says. "Those are the only options you have, Troy."

"I can't be married to her," I tell him. "I am in love with someone else and plan to marry her. I intend to propose soon, but this shit is getting in the way" I clench my fists. "This is making me lose my mind."

Greyson stands to leave. "Have Nancy call it off, then." He pauses and adds, "Shred the original copy and call it all off."

“Thank you for your time, Greyson.” I say to Greyson as he leaves my office. I am back to the very beginning. Greyson can’t help me, and Nancy is still the self-centered woman I have always known her to be.

I open my desk drawer and bring out the ring box. I meant to propose to Camile as soon as we returned from Quantico, but I can't do it now that we have a lot going on with Nancy. I open the little red box that houses the diamond ring.

I smile at the sight of it; Camile will love this ring. She will be excited when I propose to her in front of her family, but I need to get Nancy and my mother out of the way first.

Proposing to her now will make me look desperate. It will make me look frustrated as well. I want the proposal to be perfect, but I fear she will be overwhelmed and sayNo.
