"No," I counter. "They broke up a few days afterward and forgot about theirdrunkenmarriage until now.”
"So, is this Nancy back to claim the marriage?"
“Yes,” I say, “and she is playing games with Troy.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“They didn’t just get a marriage certificate at Vegas.” I pause. “They got a prenup.”
Amelia's eyes widen as she senses what is happening with Nancy and Troy. "That means Troy can't divorce without losing his property?"
“Yes,” I reply, “everything is a mess right now. Amelia. I am going crazy.”
"What is new with you?" I ask Amelia. "I feel like I have lost touch with you lately."
“Yeah,” Amelia answers. “The Robinson family is a great pain in the ass.”
“Tell me, Amelia, you look like you have found out something new.” I frown at her. “Is it a new friend? Are you replacing me already?”
Amelia laughs out loud. “No,” she says, “I am replacing Henry.”
Now, it is my turn to be shocked. "What?" I ask. "Why?"
Amelia shrugs. "I just want to live without him; it is as simple as that."
"The last time we spoke, you were clearly in love with Henry; so what changed?"
"A lot, Camile," Amelia says. "A lot has changed since you are away. Henry is a big mistake, and I am willing to stand up to my parents if it is necessary to divorce him." Amelia continues, "I want to be happy, Camile; I want to be free like you."
Amelia sounds like a teenage girl who has her first crush. She sounds like she needs to be thinking through it more clearly.
Her excitement makes me ask the question popping into my head, "Have you found someone?"
“Yes,” Amelia says cheerfully. I ask her the next question. “Who is this person?”
Amelia pauses before she answers, “Jason, my gym instructor.” She goes on with so much light in her face. “He is a good man, someone Henry can never be.”
"Are you sure about this? I mean, you still have feelings for Henry. Unless you want this to be some sort of love triangle." Amelia disagrees.
She doesn't think it is a love triangle if Henry doesn't love her. According to her, she wants to take her mind off Henry and the marriage, and Jason is helping her do that.
"I don't think going out with this Jason guy is a good idea." I look into her eyes, sure she also knows deep down, but she is stubborn to admit it.
“I don’t care, Camile,” she replies. “I am in my ‘I don’t care’ era.”
Amelia becomes an open book. "You don't want a real relationship with Jason, do you?" I frown. “You just want to get back to Henry for what he did to you. This isn't what you really want, is it?"
Amelia looks away, and I hold her hand. "I know this is a lot. Henry has hurt, and I want you to be happy, but going down this road will only consume you. Gym instructors are the worst. Plus, you should get a divorce before going out with other men."
I pull Amelia into a hug as she holds me tightly. She misses me so much like she needs that hug more than anything else.
"You will be fine," I say. "We will both be fine in the end."
Amelia pulls away from the hug. "FYI, I do not admire Nancy anymore for wanting to do this to your relationship. I am on your team if you want us to hate her for life."
I laugh out loud. “I am hosting the family dinner this weekend at Troy’s house,” I tell her. “I want you to come.”
"You didn't have to ask, you know that," Amelia answers as our pagers ring simultaneously. We leave the room, walk down the busy hallway, and say our goodbyes for the day.
