"I am Joshua," he says, "but you can call me Josh." He holds out his hand, and I take it. He holds my hand a little longer.
“Camile,” I respond.
“You look like you are new here?" he asks. "You aren't mixing up with the crowd."
I raise my brows and wonder how long Joshua has been watching me.
"I am alone because my date went to the restroom," I lie.
He looks like he doesn't buy my lie. "Your date seems to be taking a long time. If I were him, I wouldn't let you out of sight for a minute."
His words are flattering, but so are the words of every man who tries to get into a woman's panties. I am silent, unable to speak, but Joshua continues, "I thought I saw you walk in here with Troy Robinson?"
I nod a yes. “Troy is my boss. I am a junior doctor in the hospital.”
“Oh!” Joshua replies in shock. “Troy Robinson and I go way back.” Joshua's words about knowing Troy are confirmed when Troy interrupts our conversation.
He frowns at Josh. "Beat it, Josh!" Troy says, but Joshua leaves later.
He moves closer to Troy and whispers something in his ear; but before I can blink, Troy punches Joshua.
The party goes silent, and all heads turn toward us.
"Troy!" I scream, standing between them, hoping Joshua isn't triggered to return the punch. Joshua touches the blister on his lip as he walks away.
Troy raises his head and his voice. “I took you to this place,” he says. “You don’t talk or flirt with anyone here!”
I freeze, unable to believe what is coming from Troy. I knew I would regret coming to this party, but I didn't know Troy would be such a big ass.
Chapter three
Surprises
Troy
I must have had a lot to drink. I am sure Camile hates me because I shouted at her amid the staring crowd. It was great that we were all masked; people might not know who was behind the masks.
But I could tell it was Joshua behind his, and I am sure people who know me knew I had thrown the punch.
I don't know why but seeing Joshua flirt with Camile triggered something in me. Something I would call jealousy if I am not sure I have feelings for her.
I lie to myself that I was only being territorial, given the history between Joshua and me.
Camile is silent throughout the ride home after the party. When she steps out of the car, she tells me she only allowed me to drop her at home because it was too late to get a taxi.
I know I owe her an apology, but I don't know how to make her forgive me.
Today is Sunday morning, which means I have a golf club to attend downtown. I am not sure going to the club will erase the guilt I feel this morning.
I look at the time; it is a few minutes to nine in the morning; Henry, my brother, will soon be here to get my ass out of the house.
I think of switching off my phone; maybe it would help shut me out from the outside world.
But it seems to be a little too late for that since Henry is already at my doorstep.
"Hey, buddy!" He smiles at me in his white t-shirt and shorts. His long blond hair seems overdue for a cut. "Are you ready to go?" I ask.
Looking at me in my pajamas, he realizes that I am just getting out of bed. "I don't feel good," I say, hoping it will make him leave, but it doesn't. He walks past me and sits on the couch.
