Henry glares at me. I know what is happening to him. I say, "Unless Amelia has become important to you!"
Henry tries to wave my suspicion away, but I continue as Henry tries to call Amelia over the phone. "You are in love with her, aren't you?"
“You don’t know what you are talking about, Troy.” Henry kicks the car. “I just need to speak with Amelia.”
Henry turns the car around, and we return to Henry's new house. He rushes into the bedroom to find Amelia but comes back out, saying that Amelia is not in the house.
He goes into the kitchen to ask one of the maids and comes out to beg me to ask Camile if she has seen Amelia.
When Henry finally reaches Amelia, he tells me we are going to her parent's house. "Her mother just told me that Amelia just got to the house."
I reluctantly oblige Henry's request to get to his wife's location; I can't think of anyone else except Camile and how lonely she must feel in the house. Amelia smiles at us as she descends to the living room.
I know she is still putting on an act for my sake - or her parent's sake. She comes close to hug me while she kisses Henry on the lips. Henry's scared face makes Amelia frown.
"What is wrong?" Amelia chuckles as she asks the question. Although Henry and I both know Amelia is mad at him for cheating, Amelia still pretends they are good.
I know her to have been a good actor during the planned proposal along with the fake bridesmaids shenanigans, but seeing her still pretend that everything was okay between them is a great surprise.
Amelia would do anything to keep the families together - even if it meant faking her happiness. I think Henry knows this about her, which is why he had agreed to marry her in the first place.
I sit impatiently in the living room, letting Henry and Amelia have their moment. I don't wish to know what they are talking about by the patio, but I do want to go home to my baby girl.
Henry leaves the patio about forty minutes later and will not talk to anyone. He will not even talk to me until he gets to the car.
"I am dropping you off by your house," he says in a husky voice. His frown is still intact. "I hate that she sees this as a form of duty," he yells as he starts the car. "She sees this marriage as a duty, Troy, and it kills me that no matter what I do, she still smiles like nothing is wrong."
"Isn't that the whole point of your marriage?" I ask. "That was why you thought she was the best wife for you."
Henry runs his fingers through his hair. "A lot has changed, man," he announces.
"These past few months have changed a lot about me, about us." Henry's use of the word “us” confirms my suspicion. He is in love with Amelia.
"I thought you were crazy for falling in love with Camile," Henry starts, "but now, I can't call you crazy any longer because I am going insane here."
"At least you didn't make an enemy with your mother in the process," I tease Henry. I sigh and offer, "Give her time, Henry. Give yourselves both time to know what you want."
We have both wasted an hour already and decide to return home. The house feels empty when we get home.
I can feel Camile's absence already. I leave Henry in the living room and run to the bedroom to confirm my suspicion.
I find Camile's closet empty; it hits me that Camile has packed her things. She left divorce papers on the table and a note that says,Thank you, Troy. It was great while it lasted.
My hands shake as I hold the divorce papers in my hand.
Henry walks near me to see what is happening and speaks my thoughts, the ones that scare the hell out of me. "She is gone!" Immediately, I feel my limbs go weak.
Henry's hand holds my shoulder as if holding me from falling to my knees. We both stand in silence, two brothers having their hearts broken by two best friends.
Chapter twenty-two
The End of Everything
Camile
The past six months have been the longest moment of my life. Now that the contract is ending, I can't stop thinking about how far Troy and I had gone to keep it all together.
I left the house before he could return from the golf field with Henry, even though he had no clue that I was leaving.
