She is right. I should be worried about sleeping with my boss the other night and how weird things are be around him. But I am more concerned about Mother's health.

I shake my head; it is partially about Troy, but mostly about Mother. "Mother is sick," I finally reveal. "She has cancer, and I didn't know about it."

Amelia doesn't look surprised at the news. "You knew about this?" I run my fingers through my hair. "You knew and didn't tell me?"

"Your mother made me promise not to," she admits. "She promised to tell you herself, but I didn't know she hadn't done it yet."

"When did you find out?" I asked her. She said Mother came to the hospital on one of my days off. Mother intentionally made sure I didn't know she was sick.

I look away; I shouldn't be mad at anyone right now but at myself for being cold to her because of the sins of my father.

The elevator finally opens up, and Amelia and I step inside. "What are you going to do now?"

I can only think of one thing: marrying Troy Robinson. I look at Amelia; this is the only place I can tell her about Troy's proposal without risking being heard by someone.

"I may have to marry Troy Robinson?"

Amelia’s eyes widen. "What!" She is still in shock, unable to believe I am considering marrying the hospital's CEO. "Are you in love with him?"

I shake my head. "He offered to pay for Mother's treatment if I marry him," I inform Amelia. "He says he wants to escape marrying Emilie. Six months, Amelia. I will marry him for six months and then have my former life back."

Amelia looks at me, and I can see she doesn't think I will have my former life back after marrying Troy Robinson.

She doesn't think my life will be the same after coming out of that marriage.

I have that fear whenever I think of Troy and the times we have spent together. I

also don't think my life will be the same again after the marriage, but what matters now is ensuring that Mother is healthy.

My phone rings while talking with Amelia. I easily ignore the call.

She looks at me, “Who is that, Troy?” Amelia asks, noticing that I am ignoring the caller.

I shake my head to say, “No, it’s Joshua.”

Amelia looks like she doesn't want to hear any more surprises from me. "Joshua? The man from the masked party?" I listen to her ask, "Why is he calling you? You know he is Troy's biggest rival, right?'

I don't answer. I know he is Troy's biggest rival, so I have elected not to see him. "He only admires me, nothing more," I finally reply to Amelia, who is making it a big deal.

Amelia sighs, "Joshua doesn't just admire you; he goes after everything Troy wants. It is like an obsession with him. You are not special; he just wants to use you to taunt Troy. You must avoid him if you want to marry Troy."

It scares me to see the seriousness on Amelia's face. "I can because it never started," I avow as the elevator opens, and we both step out. Amelia is taking the left hallway while I am taking the right.

“Camile,” she says, “if you need anything, let me know. I will be there for you through your mother’s entire recovery process.”

I smile at her. I know she will be there for me; she doesn't have to tell me. "I know, Amelia, have a great day."

Amelia calls me back before I take the next step. “Camile, my proposal party is tomorrow.”

Yes! The weekend is Amelia's proposal, where we'd all pretend as if we didn't know Henry was going to propose. "Sure, I will be there."

I knock on Troy’s office door before opening it to find him raising his head to view me.

“Camile.” He clicks on his computer’s mouse before turning back to me. “Look, I am sorry. I didn’t know your mother didn’t tell you about the diagnosis.”

“It wasn’t your fault,” I reply. “But thank you.”

Troy holds his gaze on me.
