The patient's arm relaxes after I tell him that I agree with his actions. Camile's eyes widen at me.
She is probably thinking how heartless I am to want her to die at the hands of a psycho.
"Her name is Camile, and she’s a junior doctor here, so she is not useful to us at." At this point, I feel that I will get mobbed by my staff.
Camile looks like she will strangle me the moment she gets out of this situation…that is even a probability.
"Camile is replaceable. Thousands of med student graduates can take her place in a few days. We all are replaceable at one point in our lives." I know I have to stop talking about Camile dying now.
“But do you know what is irreplaceable?” I ask him. “The memory will dwell in your daughter for the rest of her life when she sees this moment on the monitor.”
He scoffs and brags about how he had disassembled the security cameras in the room.
I look at him. "You see, I own this place. This means I have control of everything that happens in the hospital. I may have seen this day coming, so I instructed the technical operators to have a non-visible camera."
The man with the knife starts to look around. He is nervous now and desperately wants to know where the camera is hidden.
“I will give you my word because I am a man of my word.” I catch his attention again. “I will make sure you get the treatment you request, and this situation doesn’t get to the media.”
“No police?” He looks up again, and the knife in his right-hand drops on the floor.
I swallow, trying to decide if engaging the police is the right thing to do. I feel stressed, knowing my employees will not be happy with what I say next.
"I give you my word. No police." I tilt my head sideways and hear them gasp for air.
Not involving the police and treating this man at the hospital only means that they are in potential danger themselves.
How can they be sure the man who holds a knife at one of our doctors won’t come with a gun some other time?
"No knives in my hospital again!" I make him promise, but I am sure no one believes whatever comes out of his mouth.
He releases Camile from his grip and pushes her to the door, tossing the key card at her.
Camile comes out of the hospital room; the other nurses quickly take her before she falls to her knees.
I see the redness around her neck and the fear on her face gradually vanish. "Are you okay?" I ask.
She nods, but I am sure she needs more time to get over the trauma. I am taking the patient away from her care.
"Camile," I call her as she leaves, "we should keep this a secret among the staff.
Camile looks into my eyes and nods her head. "Anything you want, boss."
Her response makes me more stressed out. "After all, you can replace me whenever you want."
I roll my eyes.
I thought everyone at the hospital knew I had said that to get into the patient’s head.
Camile walks out of my presence, and I turn to Joseph. “You knew I was trying to get into the patient’s head with the whole ‘irreplaceable' speech, right?” He raises his left brow in response and utters, “I don’t know, bro.”
He pats me on my shoulder. “That was one hell of a cold speech.”
I sigh, looking around to see how my staff looks at me. I shrug. There is absolutely nothing they can do to me.
I call Camile into my room before her shift is over…maybe to do a little damage control from my speech.
I just want to tell her that she can take the whole week off and the patient has been transferred to another doctor.
