I walk hurriedly to my car as I put a call through to Henry. His phone goes to voicemail, but I take a moment to breathe before directing the car straight to Mother's mansion.
"Why is Camile coming for dinner?" I ask Mother, who is sitting on the balcony with a book in her face. She puts it down when she hears me.
“Oh, here is my first son who almost let his employee get killed in the hands of a patient.” Mother raises her brows at me.
My jaw drops. How did Mother know about what happened in the hospital last week?
I warned everyone not to inform her that a patient had attacked her favorite employer.
Then I remember that Amelia also works at the hospital.
Amelia will be at the top of the list of anyone telling Mother everything. "How did you…?" I ask.
Mother scoffs: she can't believe I am asking her how she knows about everything happening at the hospital she once ran.
“I have ears everywhere,” she says. “I know you told your employees not to say a word to me.”
I gulp. "Is that why you asked Camile to come to dinner without my knowledge? Is that why you want her to come around without my consent?"
Mother shoves the book aside. I can't make out the book's name before she puts it away, but I am sure it is one of her favorite fiction novels - probably Nora Roberts or Daniel Billing.
"Yes, I need to make up for your carelessness." She sips the juice on the stool beside her, saying, "You almost killed her the day before yesterday, and you also punched her friend at the masked party."
I rub my eyes, wondering what this woman can't get if she wants it. I don't have to ask who told her about the masked party incident.
I know there were people at the party who would recognize me even if I wore a full robbery mask.
Mother has eyes everywhere and influences to get whatever she wants.
"I just left her house to apologize," I tell Mother. "I will make up for my lapses myself, thank you. You don't have to do that for me."
Mother stands and announces, "I hope you start doing as you say. You always seem to forget that you are the head of this family and the hospital's CEO."
“I can never forget that.” I reply. “How can I forget that I am the head of the family when you have been ringing it in my ears since I was a kid?”
Mother turns around to look at me. “Then you shouldn’t forget that now, should you?”
"Of course," I say. "I can't forget."
The maid comes in to find Mother. “Dinner is set, ma’am,” she says as Mother leads the way to the dining room.
In the dining room, Henry and his girlfriend sit beside each other. I see Camile; her lovely green eyes meet mine from where I stand. I bite my lip…I think her eyes were lovely.
“Camile,” I say as I sit next to her.
“Let’s start eating,” Henry suggests after a long silence.
Mother shakes her head. “We are waiting for someone else.”
I raise my brows. "Who are we waiting for?" I ask, but Mother is silent as Emilie enters the room.
"Emilie?" To my surprise, I look at everyone at the table to see who stares, but no one does except for Camile.
She doesn't know who Emilie is.
To be sure, I will get arranged with a woman of Mother's choice someday, but Emilie? I don't know how I feel about spending the rest of my life with Emilie.
She is the sassiest girl I have ever seen, even though I haven't met a lot of girls.
