“Why are we here?” she asked.

“Why in such a rush, honey bee?”

The bartender set a glass of water in front of each of us, interrupting our conversation. “Would you like to see a menu?”

“That will not be necessary. I’ll have a dry martini and my beautiful companion will have a limoncello on the rocks.”

“Coming right up, sir.”

“Of course you know my favorite drink.” Kavari shook her head before glancing around the room. Taking in the abundance of people, most of whom were still staring at her, she fidgeted, attempting to conceal her breasts by pulling the front of her dress up. “Why is everyone looking at us?”

“Humans tend to stare at the most beautiful thing in the room.”

Her brows rose, the nervousness causing her to suck in her bottom lip.

“Stop biting your lip,” I commanded and she released it. “Bask in the attention your beauty deserves.”

He thinks I’m beautiful, she thought with a smile.

I leaned into her, the smell of her sweet perfume caressing my nose. “Of course I do, my pet, because you are,” I whispered, before pulling away.

Her eyes widened at the nickname I hadn’t used outside of sexual activity. The smell of her arousal overpowered the perfume, causing me to grin.

The bartender set our drinks down, and I took a sip before shifting my attention back to Kavari.

“I have been listening to thoughts since we walked in the door. See that man there?” I pointed to a well-dressed human who was sipping on a drink, and Kavari glanced in his direction. “He’s a perfect candidate. He made an unfortunate business investment and lost a substantial amount of money. Now he spends all his time drinking here because he’s two months behind on bills and doesn’t know how to fix it. He refuses to tell his wife he failed her, afraid she’ll leave him. You will approach him and flirt, making his self-esteem rise. After a few drinks, the subject of money will eventually come up, it always does. Once that happens, offer to pay his debt. When he starts asking questions, I’ll appear with a contract.”

“Why do I have to do it?” she asked, her brows furrowed.

“Because you’re a gorgeous woman and his self-esteem is rock bottom. It’ll be effortless for you to gain his trust with a smile and some flirting. It used to be easy for us demons but times have changed. People are more apprehensive than they ever have been. I’m exasperated by the work it takes to obtain a soul nowadays.” I took a swig of my drink before continuing. “Now go over there and spark up a brilliant conversation with him.”

She tilted her head, her eyes locked on mine. The disobedient grin she gave me hardened my dick. “No.”

“Excuse me?” An amused smile adorned my face while I waited for her to explain her reasoning, even though I heard everything in her head before she said it.

“I’m not doing any of that! I’m not helping you retrieve—”

“Lower your voice before you finish that sentence.” The change in my tone let her know I wasn’t playing anymore.

She shook her head in exasperation before whispering, “I’m not helping you ruin people’s lives.”

“You should do what I bid, Kavari.”

She crossed her arms, my commands falling upon defiant ears. “I said no.”

Anger filled me and I narrowed my gaze. “Do it now,” I ordered, my voice low but stern.

She glanced toward the target, nonchalantly shaking her head. “No.”

Done with her shenanigans, I stood up and held out my hand. “Come with me.”

She was reluctant, worrying thoughts filling her head. Her heart raced when she finally decided to take my hand, sliding off the barstool. Almost every eye in the room was on us as I led her into the hallway where the restrooms were located.

“What are we doing, Zell?”

With advancements in technology, acquiring souls proved to be more difficult than it used to be. As I moved in close to her, I conjured my magic to make myself unseen by all living people except her—the king would be pissed if I showed up on the news . . . again.

I didn’t hesitate to get straight to the point. “I own your soul. You need to obey me.”
