And as I chew, Aden and I share a bemused look at Kade’s lack of fear when before he wouldn’t even let us stay in the same room together. Something must have shifted inside Aden, some line he must have crossed from about to lose control and cannot be trusted, to he’s on his way to being okay.

Few things have ever felt as good as this does.

“Dariel was losing control of his wolf during those runs,” Kade continues. “He said he was struggling to shift back. His wolf was fighting him more and more, and he thought he might not be able to change back in a public place, so continuing with the runs wasn’t a good idea.”

I agree. “But he didn’t actually attack anyone.”

Aden shakes his head. “Not until Mona.”

“That wasn’t an attack. He just lunged at her,” Kade adds, offering me the sausage next.

Just?

I doubt Monica would have seen it like that. I know I didn’t.

“But he didn’t kill her?” I hold my breath, waiting for his answer.

Please let the answer be no.

Kade shakes his head. “No.”

I release my breath. He didn’t kill her, so there’s hope he can control himself enough not to do the same to me. “Like he lunged at me in the Cerberus?”

Kade pauses. Before he’s spoken a word, I know what he’s going to say, and my hope dies. “No, that was different. His wolf was more determined to get to you.”

Because he was trying to kill me?

I’m poised to ask how when someone thumps hard on the front door.

Aden’s gaze slides down to the laptop, and he blinks and frowns.

“Aden?” Kade prompts, already lifting me to the next chair over as he leans toward the laptop.

“A woman,” Aden says.

Kade turns it to glance at the monitor as he rises. When I move to do the same, he spins the laptop away before I can see.

The next hard thump at the door echoes. Given she knocked not two seconds ago, it’s a bit early to be so impatient.

“Who is it?” I ask, my eyes bouncing between Aden and Kade.

“I’ll deal with it. Both of you stay here,” Kade says as he strides to the door.

I raise my brow at Aden. “Do you know her?”

Aden shakes his head as he rises and follows Kade to the door. “I’ve never seen her before, but she looks expensive.”

Expensive? What’s that supposed to mean?

I’m a step behind him. “Why aren’t we staying here?”

He arches a brow. “If you knew Kade the way I do, you’d know that when he says he willdealwith something, he does it in a way that leaves a pretty big mess.”

I frown. “What kind of mess?”

“The kind that involves chemicals and—” He bites off the rest of his words.

I wait. “And?”
