Footsteps follow. Kade.
I hurtle through the door and leap up the stairs, taking them three at a time.
I clear the first floor.
Reach the second.
Halfway up, gunfire erupts from the floor above us.
I pause. My wolf pauses.
Aden. And he’d only be firing like that if…
Head down, I run faster.
CHAPTER 37
SAIGE
My head rings. Pressure squeezes down on me, making me feel small.
Everythinghurts.
It even hurts to breathe.
And why am I lying on something wet?
“Saige?”
Go away.
I just want to sleep and never wake up again. Maybe then the pain will stop.
“Saige?” The voice that was a whisper isn’t any longer. Not full volume, but louder. Coming from beside me. Insistent.
No, not beside me,overme.
I know that voice.
A hand strokes my hair back. “Angel, baby. I need you to open your eyes.”
Kade.
Why does he sound so husky? Why does it feel like something is wrong?
Darkness reaches up from the ground, grips my ankles, and drags me under.
“… no pulse. Prep the defib.”
Who is that? I don’t know that voice.
“Saige!” Kade again.
Why is he yelling? I’m right here. I can hear him.
Hands touch me. Not Kade. This is someone else.
“Stop the bleeding… internal.” It’s that same voice again, the one I’ve never heard before.
