“We completely understood but you were missed. Even our donna joined us.”
“You mean Teo let Mia fly in her condition?” I couldn’t hide the surprise in my voice. Ever since Mia had gotten pregnant, Teo had become ridiculously protective of her. Not that he had been rational about her safety before. The crazy bastard even went as far as to try to lock her in her room before they got married.
Alex chuckled. “You haven’t been around her as much as the rest of us but if you had, you’d know that there is no telling our donna anything once she has set her mind to it. But her doctor gave the seal of approval anyway. Apparently, she’s allowed to fly until about thirty weeks as long as there aren’t any complications.”
“How far along is she? I feel like she should have already had that baby by now.”
“Twenty-something weeks. I don’t know. Less than thirty or you know that Teo would have probably had her locked up somewhere to keep her from going.”
“That’s true. In any case, I was hoping to talk to Luca before he heard about Aurora from someone else.”
“He should be home tonight. Maybe give him a call in the morning if you don’t hear from him before then?”
“Yeah, I’ll do that.”
“You know he’s going to give you hell about this arrangement of yours, right?”
“I’m sure he will.”
“Anyway, I’m just heading home to Sienna now, so we’ll talk later?”
“Sure. Tell herciaofor me.”
“I will.”
I hung up with Alessandro, shut down my computer, and gathered my things before leaving the office. I was excited for my evening with Aurora, and I still had to pick up our dinner order before meeting Aurora at my apartment.
Chapter 10
Aurora
I knocked on the door and was greeted by the sound of Enzo’s voice calling out from somewhere beyond the door. “Come in.”
I opened the door timidly and stepped inside. “Hello?”
“In here. Just follow the sound of my voice.” Enzo sounded like he was in a good mood.
“You know, for someone so high up in the mafia, you don’t seem very concerned with security, leaving your door unlocked and just calling out ‘come in’ for whoever comes knocking,” I said only half teasing.
“The security guard at the front desk let me know that he was sending you up and I can digitally unlock my door with my phone.” I eagerly searched for him, through the living room and to the formal dining table set for two.
“Oh—” I stopped, taking in the view. Enzo stood beside the table, lighting the remaining candles that made up the centerpiece. “This is lovely.”
“I’m glad you like it. I thought it would be nice to slow down and enjoy a nice dinner together while we plot.” He chuckled and it made me smile.
“That sounds wonderful. Plotting and scheming always makes me hungry.” I moved into the dining room and took the seat Enzo pulled out for me.
“Do you scheme often? Should I be concerned?” His voice was playful. I really enjoyed that side of him. It was contagious.
“Only since I met you.”
He moved behind me, scooting my chair closer to the table. His hands gently caressed my arms, as he bent down, bringing his lips to my ear. “Am I corrupting you?”
“You must be.” My voice came out a little more breathless than before, my pulse quickening. I was only able to take a deep breath once he straightened again.
“Well, can I corrupt you a little more by offering you some wine?”
“Please.”
