“Best honeymoon I’ve ever had.”
I rolled my eyes and reached for the door handle. “No complaints about me opening my own door?”
“You’re driving. That’s different.” He placed a hand on my thigh, squeezing playfully. “Are you ready for this, Mrs. Caine-Ferraro?”
“Hey now!” I smacked his hand away. “That’s only for work.”
“Then are you ready, Mrs. Ferraro?”
The same goofy smile came over me that did every time I heard that. For the first week, I’d fought it, but Antonio forced me to say it over and over again, telling me how much he loved the smile that came with it. So I practiced giving it to him freely. “Yes, Dr. Ferraro.”
We exited the truck and he took my hand once I was safely on the inside of the sidewalk. The flower baskets hanging from Via Calabria’s black lampposts were in full bloom. Stunning reds and whites surrounded by greenery.
One more day until June, the month I’d moved back to Brenton last year. “I can only stay for a few minutes. I need to get to my meeting with Matt.”
“Just come in and have Sofia set up your code, graciously accept my father’s wedding present, then you can go on your merry way. Don’t forget to take a breather and pick me up for lunch, though.”
“Any idea what they got us?”
He hummed aloud, staring all around the street, but not at me.
“You totally know, don’t you?”
“My new daughter!” Dominico stood on the sidewalk in front of the office, arms wide, waiting patiently for a hug. Sofia stood next to him, wearing a tight emerald green dress.
Antonio squeezed my hand and leaned close. “The welcome committee. How interesting.”
I glanced at my husband from the corner of my eye. “What’s going on?”
“So suspicious all the time.” He raised a hand, avoiding my question. “Papa!”
“How was your trip?” Dom took me by the shoulders and pulled me in for the most enthusiastic cheek kisses he’d ever given me.
“Amazing.” I switched to a hug from Sofia. “I even convinced Antonio to go rock climbing with me.”
Antonio hugged his sister. “And I convinced her to come to the spa with me.”
I held up my nails and all my diamonds sparkled in the sunshine. “First time they haven’t been chipped in about a decade.”
Dom clapped Antonio on the back. “Is she ready for the surprise?”
“Possibly?” I feigned a glower at Antonio, who was barely controlling his laugh.
Sofia slipped her arm around my elbow. “We can change it if you don’t like it. I think it’s too small.”
Antonio nudged his sister behind my back, and her step stuttered in those sky-high stilettos she always wore.
We walked as a group past the front of the Ferraro’s office and stopped at the glass door beside it.
“Look,” said Dom, pointing above the door.
I sucked in a breath, free hand flailing behind me to find Antonio. They’d put the sign up and it was more beautiful than I could have imagined. Not theFerraro’s Fine Art Investigationssign Dom had originally shown us. Instead, this one hadCaine-Ferraro’sat the top.
“It’s yours, my love.” Dom rubbed my back, but I couldn’t rip my eyes from it. “I only wish my father could have been here to see it.”
I pulled Antonio next to me. “You knew about this?”
“I wouldn’t say Iknew. But he emailed me every day to find out if you’d take the job, so I had a feeling once you said yes, this might happen.” He wrapped his arm around my waist. “Happy?”
