She made a face and shook her head.
“That will be all. What’s your name?”
“Betty, sir.”
“Thank you, Betty.”
Alex went back to reading and was oblivious to the tension in the room.
Chapter Seventeen
Raina watched the maid, Betty, leave and knew she’d have a problem with her. The fact that she totally ignored Raina wasn’t lost on her. When her aunt lived there, Betty had been loyal to her and pretty much ignored Raina. Now, she seemed to catch another emotion in the woman’s eyes. She guessed it was envy or jealousy, but she wasn’t sure. She’d keep her eyes on her and talk to Alex or Bainsy if needed.
Raina hadn’t had a problem with the woman. She was standoffish, but Raina didn’t care. She speculated that because a handsome man was in the house and her aunt was gone, the maid wanted what she had but had no one on her side. She was definitely one she’d fire.
After breakfast, they walked into the office. She walked over to the bookcase while Alex stood behind the desk, looking down at the stacks of papers.
“What are these, Baby?”
Raina walked over. “Articles of things that interested me, and some of my homework for the class I’m taking.”
“I want to hear more about that,” Alex said.
“It’s a government one.”
“Do you enjoy it?”
She shook her head. “No. But it was something to do during the day.”
“Do you want to keep doing it?”
She shook her head. “No.”
“That’s fine. Are you sure you don’t care if I use the desk?”
“Not at all.”
“I think we should share it. If you need it, use it.”
“I won’t. It’s too big for me. I have a table I write at in the TV room down the hall,” she said.
“We’ll find things for you to do while I’m at work.”
“Now that the witch is gone, I can start putting things back in their places.”
“I’ll call Sebastian and ask him when the other things from the storage facility will be here,” he said. He sat on the edge of the desk and pulled her between his legs. “You will always be taken care of.”
She wrapped her arms around his neck. “I know that. You’re a good daddy.”
“You better believe it.”
He pulled her closer and started kissing her. It took a moment before the scratchy sensation hit. She yanked her head back.
“You’re still scratchy, Daddy.”
He laughed. “I’ll go up and shave.”
“Okay. I’ll start bringing things out of their hiding places.”
