Chapter Nine

One week later...

We are in bed, the captain and I, enjoying the aftermath of a little coital bliss when he is summoned into action.

“Sir, we need you on the bridge. A threat has been detected.”

The voice sounds calm, and the words don’t seem that concerning, but Talon reacts immediately. Sitting up and stepping into his armor, he turns and drops a kiss on my head.

“Stay here,” he says. “And don’t get into anything. I’ll send Shank to you.”

“You don’t trust me alone in the captain’s quarters?”

“Most definitely not,” he smirks. “Be a good girl, alright?”

With that, he is gone. I lie back on the bed and think about how much has changed, and how quickly it changed. I don’t feel like I’m being held captive. I feel like I’m spending a really long dirty weekend with one of several boyfriends, Talon foremost among them.

It only takes a few seconds for Shank to arrive. He must have run the minute the captain told him I was alone. Shank still does not trust me. His silver eyes are narrowed as he comes through the door and hovers awkwardly near it, gesturing to me.

“Come on,” Shank says. “Up and out of bed.”

“I don’t feel like getting out of bed.”

“What you feel like doing is not what you’re going to do,” he says, snapping the fingers of one hand impatiently.

“I was asleep!”

“With Captain Talon in the same bed, I doubt it. Clothe yourself. You’re coming with me.”

I am not in the mood to be bossed around, but I am equally not in the mood to be punished by a man with four hands who also seems to be in a less than stellar mood.

I get up and look for my clothes.

“I don’t know where they are.”

“Just put something on and come with me. We need to get to the core of the ship.”

“Why do we need to get to the core?”

“Can you do as you’re told and not ask questions?”

“Why?”
