ASHER

“And we have no idea who these guys are yet?”

I had been up for so long my eyes were crossing. I wanted to stay for the interrogation, but Knight made it clear that he was handling things with Hunter. When all other avenues of information failed, Chase told me to get my ass upstairs with Jade, so I did. As good as it was with Jade, I was desperate for answers.

“We have a few names, but no way of knowing why they attacked Ambrose. And they’re not talking,” Chase said, sitting on the couch in my office.

“Where’s Knight?” I asked, wondering why he wasn’t in the office.

“He’s leaving,” Patrick informed me.

Chase shrugged at that. “He’s not exactly thrilled that his wife was put in danger. You saw how he dove into the action and took out those men. What is it with this guy? There’s something not quite right about him.”

“You mean he’s too much like Fox?” I asked.

“If you take away the crazy,” Patrick said thoughtfully.

I tapped my fingers on the table as I thought about the events over the last forty-eight hours. We were between a rock and a hard place with Ambrose. “We know Ambrose didn’t attack himself. But who would be stupid enough to go up against him?”

“You mean, besides us?” Chase smirked.

“We don’t have the manpower for something like that. The only way I would go after Ambrose is with a well-thought-out strategy and the right men. These guys working for us don’t have the proper training, and even with Lock’s team working with them, they just don’t have what it takes.”

“Whoever attacked has balls,” Patrick nodded. “It’s almost like they didn’t care if they lived or died.”

“We took out most of them,” I said. “The question is, how many more of them are there?”

“Let’s hope they came at us with everything they’ve got,” Chase answered.

“Don’t you find it strange that they haven’t attacked us here?” I asked. “They found out when we were coming back and attacked us on the road, but then nothing on this property. Why?”

Patrick frowned. “They want Jade—that much is clear.”

“And she’s here,” I pointed out.

“Maybe it’s someone that has animosity toward Ambrose and his family, but not you.”

“And taking out my wife wouldn’t affect me?” I retorted.

“Not if they think what everyone else does—that this is an arranged marriage.”

“Ambrose wasn’t exactly forthcoming with help on his own property,” Chase pointed out. “Speaking of, how do you want to deal with Ambrose?”

Before I could answer, the office door swung open and Knight stepped inside. The look on his face was nothing short of menacing. “We’re leaving.”

“I heard. I appreciate you coming out here, even if—”

“No.” His tone was crisp and harsh. His dark eyes stared at me like he wanted to murder me, and I couldn’t blame him after the position I put his wife in.

Hunter walked in behind him and smirked. “I see we’re all getting along so well.”

“I’m truly sorry about what happened. I didn’t anticipate being attacked at Ambrose’s property.”

“They were amateurs,” he said coldly. “Definitely not properly trained men.”

“We assumed the same.”
