He rolled his eyes at me. “I’m not her fucking husband.”

I shoved up from my desk and limped around the side. Chase tried to push himself up, but couldn’t manage with the fucking hole stitched up in his chest. He was fucking lucky to be alive.

I grabbed him by the arm and carefully helped him up. When he finally stood, we stared at each other, then started laughing.

“Fuck, we’re a pair,” I chuckled.

“Hey, I’m still as handsome as ever. Chicks dig scars.”

“Yeah, but since when have you ever cared about women?”

“I want them, just not to stick around.”

“I hate to tell you this,” I said as we limped down the hall together, “but no woman is going to want you when she sees you walking like an old man.”

He snorted. “Are you kidding? This is how I get someone to play naughty nurse.”

“Until you fucking shower, no woman is going to come near you.”

He stopped and grinned at me. “You want to make a bet on that?”

“Who the fuck are you going to get to take care of you?”

“Oh, you’d be surprised.”

I rolled my eyes and shoved the door open to the outside. Jade turned and frowned when she saw us walking out, then stood and rushed over. Something warmed inside my chest at the sight of her looking at me with concern on her face. But just when I was about to open my arms and pull her into me, she walked right past me and shoved her shoulder under Chase’s arm.

The fucker turned and grinned at me.

“What are you doing down here? Lock said you were supposed to be in bed.”

“Had to stretch my legs,” he said pathetically.

This fucker was stealing my wife!

“By yourself?”

“I was leaning on Asher,” he said, groaning when she guided him over to a chair.

“Why? So both of you can fall over?” She turned to me and pointed at the chair. “Sit.”

I did as she said without question. Something changed throughout the day. I just wasn’t sure what the hell it was.

“Do you need anything?” she asked Chase.

“Whiskey.”

She shot him a pointed look. “You know I’m not getting you that.”

“Fine,” he grumbled. “Steak.”

“You’re not getting that either. I read through your discharge papers. You’re supposed to go light on food for now.”

He sighed heavily and shot her puppy dog eyes. “I suppose I’ll take some water.”

“And crackers.”

“And crackers,” he muttered.
