You shouldn’t be doing this.
I ignored the voice in my head and slammed my lips down on hers. Fuck, everything about her was perfect. I was a fucking idiot for kissing her, for thinking about fucking her when it could potentially blow up in my face. But we’d both almost died just days ago, and right now, all I wanted was to feel her in my arms.
She wound her arms around my neck and moaned when I slid my lips from hers and trailed them across her jaw and down her neck. Everything about this was fucking perfect until my hand slid under her shirt and around her back. She tensed and jerked away from me. I already knew what she hid from me, but she didn’t know that. And I wasn’t about to bring it up now, not when she was so vulnerable.
“Sorry,” she whispered. “It’s just…moving too fast.”
“Yeah,” I said, clearing my throat. I glanced around the yard, realizing how little privacy we actually had when I saw men moving around the perimeter. I was mauling her out here like a teenager while all those men were probably gawking at us.
“I should probably get inside and do some work.”
She nodded. “I’m gonna stay out here a while longer.”
“Alright, I’ll see you later.”
I turned and walked away, but couldn’t stop myself from looking over my shoulder at her one last time. I was so fucked.

I stretched, trying to work the aches and pains out of my body. I had forgotten how much it sucked to get shot, and how much of a pain in the ass the recovery was. I rubbed my eyes, exhausted from working in my office all day. Truthfully, I was doing everything and anything to distract myself from the woman that held my undivided attention. Being in the same space as her made me lose sight of my goals. With our lives on the line, that was a very dangerous thing.
Chase knocked on the door and hobbled inside, wincing as he sat down in the chair across from me.
“Shouldn’t you be in bed?”
“Fuck, Lock keeps pumping me full of drugs. I had to pretend I was taking a shower just to get the fuck away from him.”
“But you didn’t actually take a shower,” I noted, based solely on the smell of him.
“Fuck no. I waited for him to leave me alone, and then I came down here.”
“To do what?” I grinned. “It’s not like you can actually do anything.”
“To demand you get him to back the fuck off. I’m done with pain meds, and if he comes near me with another fucking needle, I’m gonna shove it up his ass.”
I choked back a laugh. Chase was a moody fucker when he wasn’t feeling one hundred percent, and having someone order him around like this wasn’t something he was used to.
“Sorry, he’s the medic.”
“But he’s not a fucking doctor. Tell him to go bug someone else.”
“Who else is he going to bother?”
“You, you stupid fucker. You’re the one that got your head bashed in.”
“It was a graze,” I corrected. “And I’m fine.”
“Yeah? Is that why you’re hiding out in the dark?”
“I have a lamp on,” I scoffed, pointing to the single lamp on my desk.
“Whatever. How’s Jade?”
I shrugged. “I really don’t know. Scared, but she’s trying to hide it.”
“Is that why she’s sitting outside still?”
My brows furrowed at that. “Still?” I glanced at the clock. It was nearly nine o’clock. I’d been hiding away from her so I didn’t maul her, but lost track of time. “Did she eat any dinner?”
