I turned slightly toward her and slid my hand around the back of her neck, forcing her to face me. I didn’t care that Patrick was sitting in the same car as me. I needed her to know that I was in this, not only because we were married, but because I was starting to feel things for her.
“Let’s get through today, then we’ll talk tonight.”
She smiled hesitantly at me and nodded. It wasn’t too much longer before we were pulling up to Ambrose’s house.

Ambrose’s smug smile immediately had me wrapping an arm around Jade in comfort. Just knowing what this asshole did to both her and her mother was enough to make my stomach turn just seeing him.
“Jade,” he grinned. “It’s good to see you.”
I held my breath, waiting for the moment Jade gave away the game. I knew it would be hard for her not to say anything, but I needed her to keep it together. Otherwise, we’d have an all-out bloodbath on our hands.
“You too,” she lied.
I smirked at Ambrose. From his point of view, I had my wife under control, and that’s what he would continue to think. Right up until the point that I took him down. I couldn’t wait to see the horror in his eyes when he realized he’d been bested.
“Ambrose, this is Dr. Knight and her assistant Mr. Papacosta.”
“Not a doctor?” Ambrose said tauntingly.
If only he knew that Hunter could snap him like a twig, he wouldn’t be quite so hostile toward him.
“No, sir.”
“Well, I don’t see what this could possibly achieve, but you’re welcome to examine my wife. Jade will show you upstairs.” Then he turned to me. “Asher?”
I nodded and followed him without question, not bothering to turn around and watch Jade go upstairs. Between Hunter and Patrick, the ladies were well guarded. I wasn’t sure if this meeting was simply for Ambrose to have a show of power or if he actually had something to discuss. Either way, I had no choice but to sit down and listen.
“I want you to know I find it highly irregular for my son-in-law to make a request for a doctor to examine my wife,” he said irritatedly.
“As I mentioned on the phone, it’s simply to placate your daughter. And a way to keep her in line.”
He leaned back in his chair and stared at me curiously. “Tell me more about that.”
Asshole. “As you know, I’m well aware of what transpired between the two of you. If she behaves herself, there are rewards.”
“And if she doesn’t?”
“There are punishments,” I said, letting my lips tilt up slightly in a grin.
“Nothing too serious, I would hope.”
“Nothing you wouldn’t approve of,” I answered, knowing there was a whole hell of a lot he would allow.
“And what did she do to earn this…treat?”
“She pleased me,” I said simply, letting his imagination run wild.
I waited for him to bring up the informant. After all, my mic picked up his entire conversation with his guards. He wanted him brought in and questioned. Unfortunately, that’s as much as I heard. If there was anything else he found out, he didn’t say it in this room. And leaving this bug any longer increased the chances of it being found. The security footage would be scoured over, and then he would know I was spying on him, which would not end well for me.
“I had a chat with my former informant.”
“And?”
“And nothing. He swore he was innocent.”
I laughed at that. “They always do. Even in the face of death, they will never admit just how badly they screwed you over.”
