“I need to say a few things to Dad. Then I need to get to Harper and beg for her forgiveness.” Christ! How could I have been so blind?
Lucas clasps onto my arm, stopping me from leaving. “I have a few things to ask him too. I’ll go with you.” His worried expression deepens. “You look like you’re going to murder him.”
I jerk my arm free. “With the way I’m feeling, I might. I need time alone with him.”
Hayden rises. Placing a hand on my shoulder, he says, “Maybe you should calm down before you talk to him.”
Why are they so concerned about what I’ll do to him? After what he did, he deserves everything coming to him. To placate Hayden, I nod. “I’ll go for a drive first.”
Twenty minutes later, I pull into my father’s driveway. I lied and came straight to his house. The drive hadn’t calmed me down. I’m still vibrating with anger.
Letting myself into the family home, I yell, “Dad, where are you?” My voice echoes through the spacious marble foyer. When I don’t hear a response, I yell again, “Dad!” I storm through the bottom level of the house looking for him.
“What’s going on?” My father is standing at the top of the staircase, his eyes wide.
Dressed in tailored, gray pants and a crisp, white shirt, he doesn’t look like a man who’d spent time in the hospital with a suspected heart condition. Had that been an act? Did he collapse to stop Harper from telling me what he’d done? My muscles quiver.
“Finn, are you okay?” He plods down the stairs.
When he gets to the bottom step, I point a finger at his face. “Youliedto me! You’ve been lying to me…usfor years!”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. Let’s go into the kitchen. I’ll make coffee, and you can tell me what this is about.” His hand shakes as he gestures for me to follow him into the kitchen. Yeah, he knows I’m onto him.
I don’t move. “You had affairs when Mom was alive. You left her to die in a hospital while you were fucking your mistress!” He jerks back like I slapped him. “On her last breath, she asked for you. On. Her. Last. Breath!” I say through gritted teeth.
“You know I was stuck in London—”
Clenching my fists at my sides, I lean into his face. “Stoplying! I know the fucking truth.”
“If Harper is telling you this nonsense, she’s trying to come between us.” My father is visibly shaking.
“Harper tried to tell me. I didn’t believe her. My father would never be such an asshole. So, I cut her out of my life. Imagine my surprise when Hayden confirmed her story. Not only that, he informed Lucas and I about the multiple affairs you had under Mom’s nose.”
His shoulders slump forward. “I loved your mother.”
“You had a sick way of showing it. You couldn’t keep your dick in your pants.”
Swaying on his feet, he rests his hand on the nearest wall to steady himself. Never did my father look so old. In his late sixties, he was still fit and handsome. Now, in the blink of an eye, age has caught up with him.
“Forgive me,” he pleads, tears swimming in his eyes. “I never wanted to hurt anyone.”
“Don’t feed me that bullshit. You only care about yourself. You’re a liar and a cheat. You even tried to ruin our company. A company me, Hayden, and Lucas have worked our asses off to get it where it is today. We could have lost everything! For what? So you could keep your dirty, little secret. You disgust me.”
“I’ll make things right.”
I step away as he reaches for me. “Don’t touch me. In fact, never speak to me again. There’s nothing you can do or say to make this right.”
Finn… Please…”
“Thank God Mom isn’t alive to see what a pathetic excuse of a man you are.” With that, I blow from the house. I can’t stand to look at him a moment longer.
In my car, I clench the steering wheel. Taking deep breaths, I wait until the trembling inside me subsides. Once I’m semi under control, I pull out of the driveway, and I make my way to Harper’s apartment. I need to fix things. I fucked up big time. Not believing her was a huge mistake. Please let her forgive me, I say over and over again. Praying that God or whoever the hell can hear me, helps me get her back.
I get to her apartment in record time. Pulling up in front of her building, I bound from the car. Before I make it to her door, I bump into Alyssa on her way out. When she sees me, she gives me an I-want-to-kick-your-ass look. Disgusts screws up her face. I don’t blame her.
“Harper’s not home,” she says before I can ask.
“Are you saying that so I don’t go in there? I just want to talk.”
