Page 97 of Stealthy as a Wolf

So I could do nothing but watch.

It wasn’t even five minutes later when I spotted a third man following us, and the hair on the back of my neck lifted. I watched for a beat longer, noticing that not one of our stalkers ever blinked, and I mentally cursed.

Snakes.

We were being hunted.

I was completely freaked out, so convinced they would try to take my mates, that I growled, and it took all my willpower to resist the urge to go over there and eliminate the threat.

“What is it?” Grady stiffened, then tipped back his head and lifted his nose into the air.

I wasn’t surprised that he was the first to notice my distraction. The twins snarled when they spotted the snakes, while Matty just pushed me deeper into the circle of my guys.

I bit my lip and hesitated for a second. “Do you trust me?”

The guys immediately halted, forming a circle with me in the center. Caught in the middle, I swore their shoulders looked broader, their muscles bigger as their aggression thickened the air.

They were seconds away from hulking out.

“They knew we were coming. They were waiting for us.” I grabbed the back of Grady’s shirt when he took a step forward, determined to wade into the crowd, ready to take down the threat. “I know you want to fight, but we can’t afford to let them separate us. If they manage to drag us away from the crowd, they’re going to pick us off one by one.”

“What do you have in mind?” Burke remained level-headed, his blue eyes scanning the crowd, easily picking out at least a dozen men circling us like vultures.

I gave the guys a bright smile. “We get arrested.”

The men stilled, every one of them turning to look at me like I was crazy. Then Boone threw back his head and laughed. He turned on his heel, marched up to the nearest cop, and threw a punch, knocking the poor guy out cold.

While that wasn’t what I was expecting, it was very effective. In no time at all, more police officers came, and it turned into an outright brawl.

Less than an hour later, we found ourselves the proud new owners of our very own cell.

Go us!

Chapter Twenty-seven

GRADY

Itook a deep breath, crossed my arms, then leaned back on the bench and rested my head against the cinder block walls. I stared up at the ceiling and couldn’t help but wonder how I’d gotten myself into this situation.

Maggie.

A grin tugged at one corner of my mouth at just the thought of her name, and I looked over at the little wolf who’d brought the spark back into my life.

She made my days brighter, made them worth living again.

Even sitting in the middle of a cell with my new pack, I’d never been happier.

Though she might make a habit of plunging headfirst into trouble, I found it sexy as fuck that she could take care of herself. She didn’t have an ounce of fear when it came to fighting for what she thought was right, and I couldn’t have been prouder.

I didn’t need to be her alpha. Instead, I could just be her partner, and it was a novel experience. It allowed me to get to know her like a true mate, and I fucking adored everything about her.

The twins sat on either side of our mate, fussing over her bruised knuckles, but Matty would not be calmed. He paced the cell back and forth, running his fingers through his hair repeatedly. I couldn’t blame the kitten. He’d spent years locked behind bars, and now he was back behind them again.

While the police didn’t know he was an escaped con, they would figure it out as soon as they ran our prints.

It wouldn’t be long before the authorities were notified.

“What’s next?” I turned toward Maggie, because I had no doubt she was already plotting something.
