The two of them then ducked their heads together and strode away, no doubt plotting murder and mayhem. As their delighted chatter floated in the air behind them, I couldn’t hold back my smile at the sight…until I heard Tessah’s next words.
“We have a great partnership ahead of us. If this case goes well, we can set out our own assassins’ shingle!” The girls walked off, giggling and talking about the merits of dismemberment versus acid when disposing of a body.
One of Tessah’s mates, a big, dark-skinned dude, hurried after them, muttering about licenses and a web presence for their new business.
A beat of silence passed, then the muscular, dark-haired man with blue eyes and tattoos scowled after the trio. “Should we be worried?”
The man with a perpetual glower standing next to him just grunted.
Another beat of silence followed as we all glanced at each other, then Boone grinned and shrugged. “Nah, if they kill anyone, we’ll be there to hide the bodies.”
Both sides seemed to be holding their breath, waiting for the other to react, then the preppy man grinned. “We’ll need some ground rules.”
Grady nodded and fell into step beside the man. “We’ll let them have their fun, but if anyone so much as looks at them sideways—”
“We kill them,” Burke supplied before anyone else could suggest anything. When we all glanced at him, he just shrugged. “No one touches my mate but me.”
The rest of the men just nodded, like it made perfect sense, and we trailed behind the girls. After years of thinking that I’d lost my sister, I was grateful to have her back in my life. Despite all the odds, my sister had managed to find men who were possibly just as psychotic as her.
They accepted her.
They made her happy.
I couldn’t ask for anything more.
I stood behind them for a second longer, watching as the two groups seamlessly merged together like one big pack, and I couldn’t stop the slow grin that spread across my face.
Whatever the future held, we would face it together.
As a pack.
The End
