She pushes my pants down further and cups my balls just in time for that familiar tingle to hit.

“Layla,” I try to warn her and tug on her hair. “Lays, really. I’m…”

She hums in response and keeps going.

There’s nothing I can do to stop it. I explode in her mouth, praying that my legs don’t give out from under me.

Layla keeps going until there’s nothing left for me to give, then she lets me go with a pop…and wicked smile.

I manage to keep enough wits about me to help her to her feet and kiss her. “That...was fucking incredible.”

“It was everything I imagined and then some,” she confesses.

After having my mind blown in the middle of my living room, my plan is for Layla to stay the night. We eventually make it upstairs to my bed, but after another round of delicious orgasms, Lays is ready to leave.

“Trust me, I would be here all night for more of that. Unfortunately, I’ve got to get home to Pepper. I swung by on my way over to let her out and to buy us more time, but I can’t leave her alone overnight. All it took was one night of too much wine at Cassie’s to find out Pepper hates being left alone at night. She was not happy with me,” she says as she gets dressed.

I understand where she’s coming from. Doesn’t make me feel any less disappointed, though. Hell, maybe I don’t even have a right to feel disappointed.

Just a sexy secret fling, right?

Several days later, I’m rushing through my house as I’m running late. Which doesn’t help the mindset that I’m in right now. My eyes snag on the spot where Layla was on her knees last time she was here and my thoughts got carried away. Now is not the time for indecent thoughts about Layla. It’s half past five and while it’s getting lighter out now that it’s spring, I opt to leave the foyer light on.

Moments later, I’m heading south toward the circle for a date with Mina, Ruth’s first match for me. I’m not overly excited about this date, but I’m hoping that I can get myself out of this funk I’ve been in all day. A couple weeks ago when I first met Mina, I thought she was wonderful and it caused me to pause, thinking that maybe Ruth was on to something. But now that our pending date is happening, I’m not so sure this woman is really a good match.

My phone rings, pulling me out of my dreadful thoughts. My grandmother’s name flashes on the digital dash of my new Bronco.

Hitting the talk button on my steering wheel, I tell her hello.

“My dearest Cole. How are you?” Her dramatic tone fills the cab.

“Doing all right.”

“Ruthy tells me that you’re going on your first date tonight. I was starting to think this was never going to happen.”

“It’s not my first date. I’m a very seasoned dater, Grandma.” I chuckle.

“Pish-posh, this date is the only first date that counts now. Ruth says this woman is fantastic.”

I scrunch my nose. “She told you about Mina?”

“Of course she did. I’m just so excited that you’re about to meet your match.” She’s so damn excited, but I need to curb her expectations.

“I’ve met Mina, and she does seem wonderful, but I’m not sure she’s my match. That’s what the dates are for. Don’t get ahead of the game here.” I try to sound diplomatic, but I can’t shake the feeling that I shouldn’t be going tonight.

My grandma sighs and I brace myself for whatever she has to say next.

“Cole, I’m worried you’re not taking this seriously.”

“I am one hundred percent taking this seriously,” I tell her and I’m a little miffed by the accusation.

“Are you? You don’t sound like you’re excited for this date.” And she hits the nail on the head, folks.

“No, I am, but I’m worried about disappointing you and Ruth.” And Layla for a whole other reason, but I don’t share that.

“And we would be disappointed how?” she asks.
