RORY
When I blinked my eyes open, I was surrounded by darkness. I started to panic. My throat swelled shut, and my heart raced. I took deep breaths, trying not to freak out. I didn’t know where I was, only that someone had taken me. I had to keep calm until I knew what was going on.
I closed my eyes again and did inventory. My body wasn’t hurting anywhere. I could move my muscles, my limbs. I wasn’t injured in any way. Aside from a throbbing headache, I was okay.
Turk flashed before me, and I remembered him being at my place.
What the fuck?
When I blinked my eyes open again, I realized it wasn’t completely dark. I was in a cavern of sorts, with black rock walls that stretched upward and created a dome above us. I lay on the sandy floor against a wall, and a short distance away from me, a small fire flickered, casting the bit of light I could see by.
Turk sat close to the fire. At least, I thought it was Turk. When I blinked again, I wasn’t entirely sure. He had some strange form of darkness that wrapped around him. I recognized his round baby-face, his long, oily hair, his arrogant way of carrying himself, but his skin seemed to be foggy, and his eyes weren’t normal.
They seemed to be black, although it was hard to tell from here.
When he turned his head to me, terror shivered down my spine. Those eyes were completely black, bottomless, soulless.
“Ah, you’re awake,” he said.
His voice still sounded the same. He walked to me, and his movement was still the same as that of a shifter. What was going on here?
He smirked when he came closer.
“You don’t have to be so suspicious of me, you know,” he said.
“What are you?” I asked.
Turk looked down at his hands. “Oh, this? Yeah, over here, the other half of what I am shows. You know my dad is a real piece of work. He’s supposed to be this amazing guy, a great influence on society, and he gives back so much to the community, blah, blah, blah… One of his many secrets is his ugly kink.”
I shook my head. It throbbed dully, and I struggled to put two and two together.
“What are you talking about?”
“Dad has always had a thing for demons, and there are places in this world—like this one—” He waved his hand around the cavern. “—but maybe better decorated, that allows them to come together and fuck.”
I frowned. “Your dad likes demons?”
“Yeah.” Turk rolled his eyes. “Fuck if I know why, but I should thank him. If he didn’t, I would never have existed.”
I blinked at Turk. “You’re…”
“Half demon,” Turk said with a proud grin.
“Not your mother’s son,” I added.
Turk snorted. “No, thankfully, because that bitch is a pain in my ass.”
I shook my head. How had we missed all of this? I tried to think back to when he’d come to join us in New York.
“How could you have possibly hidden that?” I asked.
“I know a spell, but it only works in short bursts. And I’ve learned what beings want to see and hear. I can play the game. Did anyone in your pack ever spend long periods of time with me?” he asked.
The truth was, I didn’t know if my pack members had spent long periods of time with him. So many other things had been going on at that time, such as Colter finding his mate and the vampires turning on our pack.
When I’d started looking for Turk here, I’d picked up on dark magic. The wound on Bishop’s neck that wouldn’t heal had been the first big thing.
It felt like physical punches as all the pieces fell together.
