A less honorable man wouldn’t care about protecting her from an assassin but he risked his life for her. She would never forget that. Heck, as much as it pained to admit it, her father would never do that for her.

Kat curled next to him and she trailed her fingers over his left pectoral, the spot which housed his heart.“Never deceive me again. Promise me that, Husband,” she said.

“I do,” Angelo said and she believed him.

Chapter Five

As Angelo dressed, he took a few minutes to admire his new bride, naked and tangled in the sheets. Kat looked like a fallen angel, with her rosy limbs peeking from the white fabric and her hair spread out on the pillow like a halo.

Whether she believed the promises he made the night before was irrelevant. Angelo intended to earn her trust again. The fact he was putting so much effort into this arranged marriage astounded Angelo. This union might have started out as a business arrangement but he had a feeling it would evolve to something more. Where it would lead, Angelo wasn’t sure yet, but he intended to find out. Fate had given him an unexpected gift and he intended to take care of his treasure.

Kat finally opened her eyes. She gazed at him, then blushed.

“Good morning, Wife,”Angelo greeted.

Kat quickly composed herself, lifting the comforter to cover her exposed breaths. Angelo chuckled, approached the bed, and peeled the comforter away.

“Don’t hide your tempting body from me, Wife. It’s not like I had an eyeful of you the past two nights,” Angelo said.

“Just an instinctive reaction,” Kat grumbled.

She seemed to come to a decision, because she slipped out of bed. Angelo raised an eyebrow as she neared him and started buttoning up his shirt. Then she deftly did his tie.

“Off to work right after getting married yesterday?” Kat asked.

“There’s some urgent business I need to take care of this morning,” Angelo said apologetically.

Angelo ran a tight ship. He achieved what his predecessor could not. Angelo found a perfect balance when it came to running the Familia’s legal and illegal businesses.

He really was genuinely sorry. Today, Kat was officially moving to his home. Well, it was their home now. Kat had grown up in her father’s house, so it wouldn’t surprise her that Angelo used his home as headquarters for the Vitale Familia. He wanted to see her reaction to the house he spent years renovating and furnishing firsthand, but he had an important meeting with his investors today. Also, the botched assassination attempt the night before gave him cause to worry.

His one regret was shooting the assassin dead. Angelo wished he could have wrung the bastard for more answers. At the very least, the killer had given him a name—Don Tomas Barbaro. While Angelo wouldn’t go so far as to call Tomas his friend, Tomas used to be a longtime ally of his, until Angelo agreed to marry Don Aldo Marino’s only daughter.

Tomas and two other groups considered the Marino Familia his enemy. When Angelo decided to ally himself with them, Tomas probably considered it a betrayal. Still, to send a hitman after him? Tomas sure had guts, because he knew Angelo wasn’t a particularly forgiving man.

“I see,” Kat said. Did he hear disappointment in her voice?“Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine on my own.”

“I’m sure you will,” Angelo said. He snuck a kiss on her mouth. Kat looked momentarily surprised, then kissed him back.

“When will I see you again? At dinner?” Kat asked.

“Yes,” Angelo said.“I’m looking forward to knowing my new wife better.”

Angelo checked his watch. He felt bad abandoning her so soon.“I still have time. Are you hungry? Let’s have some breakfast together,” he suggested.

Kat looked relieved.“I could eat,” Kat admitted.

“I’ll have food brought up,” Angelo volunteered.“What would you like?”

“Thank you. Waffles sound good, and some fruit,” she said.“And coffee. I’ll go wash up.”

Angelo phoned room service. Kat disappeared into the bathroom and emerged wearing a fluffy robe a few minutes later. Angelo took off his suit jacket, then settled on the bed. Kat, after a few seconds of hesitation, slipped next to him. Kat turned the TV on, settling on a news station.

“Won’t your shirt and pants get wrinkled?” Kat asked him.

“I’ll have my PA iron them out before my meeting,” Angelo said.“How are you feeling this morning?”

“After what happened last night, I thought I wouldn’t be able to sleep but it’s the exact opposite,” Kat admitted.
