“Elated. There are no words,” she admitted.“What about you? How do you feel about this news?”

“Are you kidding? I’m pleased you’re pregnant,” Angelo said.

He leaned forward and gave her a rough and deep kiss that made her wet immediately. Kat found she was no longer tired. She wanted to drag Angelo to their bedroom and beg him to have his way with her. How could she be so horny? Was it because of her pregnancy?Focus on the conversation, Kat reminded herself. This was important.

“Because you now have an heir?” she asked him.

“Yes,” Angelo said simply. He never minced his words with her and she liked that about him.“But also because we made something—a baby—that’s part you and part me.”

“It’s amazing, isn’t it?” Kat asked.

“You’re amazing,” Angelo said, then kissed her again.

Ten Months Later

Angelo had placed two steaks on a skillet. Then he seasoned the tender meat with pepper. He hummed while he cooked. It had been a long time since it was just Kat and him in the huge house. He’d given the staff and most of his men the day off, leaving a skeletal security team behind.

Hearing a cry from the living room, Angelo quickly turned off the stove and ran to where Kat was. Realizing he didn’t have any weapons on him, Angelo snatched a cleaver from the nearby knife block.

Blood thudding in his ears, he burst into the living room, brandishing his weapon. Who could be attacking them and why now? Even if he had minimal security, no one should be able to break into their house, not without encountering several difficulties.

Kat stared back at him, seated alone on the couch.“Where is he?” Angelo demanded, looking around the living room. The windows remained opened but the door leading to the gardens remained shut.

“Angelo, it’s just me,” Kat said quickly.

“Then what—” Angelo couldn’t finish his sentence. Kat interrupted him with another groan. Angelo left the cleaver on the coffee table and sat next to his wife, alarmed. Kat grasped his hand tightly. He followed her gaze and found a small puddle at her feet. Kat gave him a pained look.

“Husband, I think my water just broke,” she whispered.

“The time has finally come,” Angelo murmured to himself in awe.

He shook himself awake. Kat was in pain right now and they needed to go to the hospital, pronto. He yelled for Theo somewhere in the house. His second came running in mere moments. Theo had drawn his gun and like Angelo, looked confused when he didn’t see any intruders in the living room.

“Call the hospital ahead. Get the car ready,” Angelo told his second. Kat attempted to stand, but Angelo simply put his hands on her waist. He lifted her into his arms without difficulty. Kat blushed a deep crimson.

“I can perfectly walk on my own, Husband,” Kat told him.

Nonetheless, she wrapped her arms around his shoulders. Theo momentarily left their side and returned with a black bag containing the supplies Kat might need during her hospital stay. They’d prepared for this scenario, Angelo reminded himself, so why did his heart beat in trepidation?

Sweat beaded on his brow as they exited the house. Theo opened the car door for him and he slid his wife gently in, before joining her. Once they were inside, Theo got behind the wheel. His second started the engine. Kat reached for his fingers and he looked at her.

“How are you feeling?” Angelo asked.

Another contraction hit Kat and she groaned, resting her free hand on her distended stomach.

“Honestly? Not so great,” she answered.“Let’s get this show on the road.”

“Step on it,” he told Theo.“Also, drive carefully.”

“Sure, Boss.” Theo didn’t argue with him.

His second probably knew by the tone of Angelo’s voice that he was stressed. Even the threat of assassins didn’t hold a handle to what he felt that evening. Worry constantly gnawed at him during the drive. Kat even leaned over when she wasn’t in pain and kissed him on the cheek. It seemed wrong she was comforting him when she was the one doing all the work.

It felt like an eternity but they finally arrived at the private hospital. Theo had phoned earlier so a nurse with a wheelchair waited for them. Angelo wouldn’t leave Kat’s side, even as they placed her in the chair. The nurse wheeled her right into the hospital. After that, everything became a blur of events. Time slipped by.

Angelo couldn’t remember being this terrified in his entire life. Questions plagued his mind. Were Kat and the baby going to be fine? What if complications arose with her delivery?Stop panicking, Angelo reminded himself. Kat needed his support. Getting all worked up for no reason—that wasn’t him.
