“Okay, I’m a fallen angel. But not because I’m bad.” Rafael’s lips press together as he thinks of what to say next. “We were born on Earth. Father assembled a team of us to protect the humans from the rogue angels—ones who humans would call demons. It’s been over three hundred years since we last had instructions from father, and very few demons or angels are left.”
“Why would your own father want you dead? Dale said your father gave him the weapon.” I rush my words, wanting to understand.
“I’ve not a clue. For the last one hundred years, humans have seemingly been hunting us. Sometimes demons and other celestial beings aided them. Seven of us remain down here. We’ve all been hiding. That’s why we’re so weak; we haven’t been using any of our gifts, because using them emits a signal to the others that we’re alive.”
Panic rises in my heart.
Rafael places his hand on my chest.
“And now they will come after you?”
Rafael nods. “After us all.” He wraps his arm around me. His skin is so cold now, it feels as if it burns when he touches me.
I look at his face, his beautiful plump lips, and his warm green eyes. I glance at the oozing cut on his shoulder, the white liquid drying and coagulating. “What’s next, then?” I mutter as he pulls me against his chest.
“I promised to protect you, and I will. If that means I need to kill God himself, I’ll do it. This isn’t over. A battle is coming, Rose. And we’ve got no choice but to fight.”
I close my eyes as the wind brushes my cheeks. The fresh air burns the open wounds that must cover my body. I try to swallow, but my mouth is too dry. From now on, my life will never be the same. From the moment I set eyes on Rafael, he has turned my whole world turned upside down. And one day, I’ll recall when all this began, on the day I met the angel I’d fall in love with. A cold tear drops down my cheek as I try to remember my life before, my parents’ smile. I can’t remember a simple life, one without pain.
Rafael’s hand brushes my cheek to wipe away the tear.
I open my eyes to see his face only centimetres from mine, his warm breath sending my tastebuds wild.
Rafael’s lips touch mine, and the world, for just a moment, is calm.
