Silent tears are streaming down my cheeks. This really hurts. I suddenly feel so alone.
Scott walks in the kitchen and sees me crying. “Cassie, what’s wrong?”
I muster a smile. “Nothing. My father isn’t coming today. It’s not a big deal. He misses everything in my life. I shouldn’t be surprised.”
Scott wraps his arms around me and kisses the top of my head. “I’m so sorry. Even if expected, I’m sure it still hurts. If it makes you feel any better, I’ll be there cheering for you.”
“Thanks, Scott.” I look up at him. “Please don’t tell Darian about this. She’ll be upset for me. She’s on cloud nine right now. I don’t want to bring her down.”
“Okay. I won’t mention it. Will you join us for dinner tonight? I’m taking the whole Kaplan crew out to celebrate Darian. We can celebrate both of you. It will be double the fun.”
I shake my head. “I don’t want to intrude. It’s Darian’s special celebration. You guys should focus on her.”
He pulls back and smiles. “You know that’s not how she’d view it if we asked her. Cassie, you’re an amazing friend to my future wife. I know you will always be in our lives. You’re practically family. You will always be welcome with us. We’re happy to have you. In fact, I insist you come out with us tonight.”
I nod. “Okay, I’ll come. Thank you, Scott. I really appreciate it.”
“Of course.” He smiles. “I know she told you that you’re going to be an aunt.”
“Yes. Congratulations to you.”
“Thank you. I’m so excited. I hope it’s a girl, and she’s just like Darian in every way possible.” So do I.
He looks toward the room where he left her. “I guess we’ve got a crazy year ahead of us, Cassie. Two more weeks until the wedding, and now the baby. She’s going to be the most beautiful bride ever, isn’t she?”
I smile. “She definitely will.”
“She’s going to need you.” I nod. “There’s so much going on. I think she’s overwhelmed right now. I don’t want her stressed with the baby coming.”
“I’ve got her, Scott. I always will. Don’t worry.”
“I know you do.” He puts his arm around me. “You know, my college roommate, that guy I previously mentioned to you, is looking forward to meeting you at the wedding. I think he could be Mr. Right.”
I roll me eyes. “Scott, you know I’m only looking for Mr. Right Now. I have zero interest in finding Mr. Right.” Scott’s always trying to fix me up with his friends. I think he believes Darian will be happier if I’m married, especially to one of his friends. He’s tried to set me up with every single one of his high-school buddies, but I have no interest in those guys. They’re a bizarre group.
We walk back into the living room. Scott takes Darian’s hand, and motions toward me. “Are my two stunning, brilliant women ready to graduate?”
We both nod. The three of us make our way out the door to receive our college diplomas.
I not only remember that day as our graduation. It was the end of my time living with Darian, it was the day Scott welcomed me into their family, and it was the last time I ever spoke to my father.
CHAPTERTHREE
TREVOR
Iarrive at Dad and Darian’s house a little early on Memorial Day. I want to talk with him about my future plans before everyone else arrives. I know my New York City decision has ramifications on the business, and I want to get him an answer so he can move forward one way or the other.
He’s been extremely patient with me. I know I’m lucky to have the opportunities he’s giving me.
I’ve been in the office for the past few weeks, learning about the business from Dad and Payton. They run a great operation. I’m excited for my future working with them. The business will only continue to grow. I’ve got a lot of ideas on how to make that happen.
My New York decision has been looming. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about it, and I know in my heart what I want to do.
I don’t see anyone around the house, but they must be here somewhere. I shout out, “Dad, Darian, are you here?”
A minute or two later, he comes out of his bedroom in a towel, with his hair all messed up, but dry. I smile and shake my head. The two of them are ridiculous. They go at it more than teenagers. I look up at him. “Sorry to interrupt.”
“It’s okay. We weren’t expecting anyone just yet.” That’s obvious. “You’re super early. What’s up? Is everything okay with you?”
