His child.

He had sworn that he would not carry on his bloodline. His family name.

He died thinking you wouldn’t. He died thinking that you had surrendered the estate.

His blood was at the estate whether or not he acknowledged it.

Of all the tricks that could possibly have been played.

His child would be the heir whether he staked a claim or not.

His child.

His child.

A baby.

He pushed the intercom button on his phone. “Natalie,” he said, barking his assistant’s name. “Have the private jet ready to leave. I need to go to Scotland.”

“Yes, sir.”

His tone brooked no argument. He made sure of that.

Other than that, he could not think straight.

Jessie Hargreave was pregnant with his baby.

He had to see her.

As quickly as possible.

Even though doing that meant a trip into hell.

“I don’t know how anybody got in here with a camera without us knowing.”

Jessie looked up at Maren, who was pacing the length of the dining room.

“It’s fine,” said Jessie, not feeling fine in the least.

“You won’t think so if our father finds us.” Maren’s eyes were round with fear and whenever Maren was afraid, Jessie wanted to protect her.

Maren needed to be handled gently, and Jessie had always known that. She was soft. A little pink marshmallow of a human who had to be gently coddled.

“He didn’t find us when the first news stories were printed,” Jessie pointed out.

And she had a security detail, reporting her father’s moves and making sure they were safe.

Maren frowned. “Yes, but more is just tempting fate.”

It wasn’t their father that worried her.

“You know me, Maren,” said Jessie. “You know I’m not going to let him get us. He thinks he’s smarter than us because he made us and that will always, always be his downfall. I’ve always been better at a math equation than him. Always better at angles. And you? You...”

“Will feel an intense emotion at him?” she asked, blinking slowly, her face placid. She was being dry, but with Maren it was hard to tell. It was part of herinnocent creaturepersona.

“What are Dad’s weaknesses?”

“His ego. His dependence on wealth, and his aversion to hard work.”
