Kit shrugs. “Sure, no problem.”

I nod. “Cool. I’ll probably crash at the penthouse, but I’ll be home early—before six.”

She smirks at me, eyes full of knowing amusement. “That’s not a problem either. Have fun.”

Yeah, she’s not an idiot. She worked out pretty early on that when I go out and crash at the penthouse it means I’m getting laid. I doubt she’s figured out I’m getting fucked in the ass by a random guy, though.

CHAPTER5

DEACON

“Hey, isn’t that the sexy silver fox you have a crush on?” Skyler asks me, glancing over my shoulder.

I roll my eyes, assuming he’s just stirring up shit like usual, but when I turn to see what’s captured his attention, I almost pass out from shock. Because, for once, Skyler is being a hundred per cent serious. Tanner Grimsay is sitting at the bar, looking hotter than ever in dark jeans and a gray knitted sweater. “Jesus Christ,” I mutter, swinging my head back around before he catches me watching him. “It really is him.”

“Who?” Jackson asks, peering curiously around Skyler and me to get a look at the bar.

“A parent of one of Deacon’s kindergarteners,” Skyler informs Jax. “Deac’s got a major crush on him.”

“I don’t remember using the word ‘major’,” I mumble.

Skyler just shrugs. “Well, at least you know one thing now—he actually is into guys.”

I shake my head. “I don’t know that. He probably came in here by accident.”

Sky sends me a skeptical look. “Right. He justaccidentallywandered all the way to Brooklyn, andaccidentallywound up in a gay bar, andaccidentallysat down and ordered a drink even after realizing his ‘mistake’.” He lifts his fingers to form air quotes of condescension.

I fold my arms over my chest and issue him with a rueful look. “Okay, fine. It wasn’t an accident. But just because he’s in a gay bar doesn’t mean he’s into guys. Jackson’s in a gay bar,” I point out, gesturing to my very straight friend, who has dutifully endured several guys hitting on him throughout the evening just because Skyler was in the mood for cruising.

“Jackson got out-voted,” he says in a grumble.

“And we thank you for your sacrifice,” Skyler says with a grin, throwing an arm around Jax and planting a big, sloppy kiss on his cheek.

“You’re never going to find someone to hook up with if you keep cuddling up to me,” Jax says dryly.

Skyler just hugs Jackson tighter and rests his head on his broad shoulder. “I can’t help it. You’re so cuddly. Like a giant teddy bear.”

A guy walking past stops to admire Jackson, taking in his broad, bulky frame, tattooed arms, and thick, black beard.

“Not that kind of bear,” Skyler says to the guy, a hint of warning in his tone as he gestures for the guy to move along.

“Okay, as much as Ilovebeing objectified, I think I’ve hit my limit for the night,” Jackson says, prying himself away from Skyler.

“It’s still early,” Sky says with a pout.

Jackson offers a wry smile. “Which means you’ll have plenty of time to go chat up guys without worrying about me. Just don’t forget you’ve got a paper due tomorrow.”

Skyler rolls his eyes. “Yes, Dad.”

Jackson lets out a chuckle then slaps me on the back as he passes on his way to the exit. “Bye Deac. Good luck with the sexy silver fox.”

At his words, Skyler’s pout forms into an excited expression that can only mean trouble. I groan inwardly as dread fills me.

Seriously, Jax—you just had to remind him…

“I think I’m going to get a drink,” Sky says brightly.

I shake my head. “No, no, we don’t need more drinks.”
