I grin, “Thanks, sis.”

We hear the door to the café open, a ringing bell quite literally saving my hide.

Dana and Amy reemerge from their conversation, Dana ready to take charge of kicking out this misguided patron. “Oh, sorry, this is a private…” She gasps. “Grant! What are you doing here?”

I peek around her. Sure enough, there’s Grant. “Honey, I told you to wait in the car.”

Grant looks at me with his easy smile. “Ha, ha, very funny.”

“This is a girls-only event, you know that,” Victoria admonishes.

He runs his hand back through his dark hair, silver threads of hair shining. “Right. Yes, I do know that.”

Something is off. I know it. We’ve been together such a short time, but it’s been a lot in a very short time. His tells are as clear as day to me. When something is brewing under the surface, he keeps playing with his hair and smoothing out the front of his shirt. “What’s going on?”

Grant swallows and rolls his eyes. “Well, I’d say ‘nothing’ but that would sort of defeat the purpose of why I’m here.”

I frown, glancing around the room. Everyone is at a loss for words, except Amy, who snaps a photo on her phone. “Gotta capture every moment,” she says to no one in particular.

“Could you stand, Harley?” Grant asks.

I put my hands on my belly and sigh. “Do I have to?”

The corner of Grant’s smile jumps in exasperation. The sooner I follow his instructions, the sooner I get answers. “Help me up,” I say to Kira.

She gives me her hand and I push myself up out of the chair.

“Okay, I’m up,” I say through a laugh.

Grant looks at everyone. “Well, this is more intimidating than I thought it was going to be.”

“Grant…” Dana says. “What are you doing?”

“I can’t wait.”

Her eyes widen. “So, you’re doing itnow?”

“Doingwhatnow?” I ask in confusion.

“You’re so impatient,” Victoria scolds Grant. “You couldn’t wait like five hours?”

“You try sitting on your hands at home waiting for something like this and then we’ll talk,” Grant replies quickly.

“Would someone tell me what’s going on?!” I call out.

The room is once again silent. As I scan everyone’s faces, I can just tell they know something I don’t. Then, my eyes land on Grant. “Grant, just…what’s this about?”

He takes a deep breath, his shoulders heaving. “I was going to wait until tonight. When you came home…but I just can’t wait anymore, Harley.”

“Okay?” I can’t comprehend what he’s doing at first, sinking down toward the floor. But once he’s there, on bended knee, it all snaps into place. “Oh, my god…”

“Harley Elaine Solace.”

“You’re doing this? You’re actually doing this? Right now?”

“Apparently,right now,” Victoria grumbles.

Grant smiles. “Yes. Is that alright?”
